YACHT’S LONG TRIP
VALKYRIE AT RUSSELL SHORT OF PROVISIONS From Our Own Correspondent RUSSELL, Friday. The Valkyrie, which arrived at Russell on Christmas Eve, left Suva on November 30. after the finish of the first hurricane season. The wind came ahead, and the yacht could not clear the reefs. She ran back to Suva and waited for a fair wind. She left again on December 5, at 12.30. The wind freshened to a moderate gale, and at 9.30 p.m. she cleared Cape At ashington. It was blowing a whole gale the next morning. The yacht was driven 250 miles out of her course.
Although the Valkyrie experienced very rough weather, no damage was done to the hull or gear. Captain Gilling was on deck for 39 hours without a spell. Being short of provisions, ho decided to put into Russell. The yacht leaves for Kawau tomorrow morning, and will afterward go on to Auckland.
