THE SNOWDROP

Once upon a time, long, long ago, when the world was just one big garden, there grew a plant that had no blossoms, just green shiny leaves. The other plants laughed and jeered at him, and called him names, and none of them bothered with him, and he became sad and silent, and his leaves all drooped. One day, when the snow was gently falling, here and there on his leaves it lay, and he called to the other plants: “Oh, look at my flowers! Just look at my flowers!” And they laughed and said: “Why, they are only drops of snow, not flowers. You haven’t any flowers, only green leaves.” So he drooped his head, and looked so sad, that the Maker, who was passing, stooped and touched his leaves, and said: “Flowers, you shall have, white and pure as the snow. You shall be winter’s flower, when other plants are bare, and your name shall be Snowdrop.” So now in the winter we see him with his tiny white blosoms, just frail little drops of snow. Dick Schofield, aged 8.
