BROKER DISPOSES OF DOLORES DEL RIO TO UNITED ARTISTS’ FIRM
Like prosaic shares Dolores Del Rio has been sold under a cold business contract formed by buyer, seller and broker. The seller was Edwin Carewe and the buyer United Artists. Carewe discovered Dolores in Mexico, persuaded her to enter pictures, and later fell in love with her. Now he has transferred his interest to United Artists for a lump sum and 20 per cent. of the net profits on Dolores’s -o*l. uve pictures, until he receives .£ 100,000. On the strength of it Carewe intends to retire from tilms and use the money in the development of outside affairs. The contracts will not affect the star financially. She will receive £18,500 for her first picture, ■with payments increasing until for her fifth picture she will get £24,500.
ties used to work on Chaplin, Negri, and Valentino time after time. One paper reported that Richman’s press agent approached a number of stars, including Greta Garbo, for permission to use their names in the engagement story before Clara Bow became involved.
Richman contends it was love at first sight. “I said to her, ‘Baby, I'm strong for you. You come and meet me here at 5.30 tonight, and I’ll take you out to the' Montmartre.' ” Though she had hitherto been one of the earliest on the sets, Clara proceeded to arrive as late as she wished. "To hell with movies; I’m in love!” she told production executives who mentioned how many thousands each hour’s delay cost. “To Hell With Movies”“To hell with movies; I’m in love,” she carolled constantly, but each day engendered a doubt. If their engagement was a publicity' stunt, the stab was not. The stab spells scandal; and Paramount, who pay Clara £SOO a week, have a morality clause in most contracts to govern the private life of players. The next scene may be Harry Richman kneeling at the Bow bedside—or to a group of reporters, pleading with them: “Kill that story before it kills me.” Later news from Hollywood indicates that the estrangement was patched up after a few weeks. Clara, who has completely recovered, heard that Richman was attending a party given by Paul Whiteman without her, says the San Francisco "Chronicle.”
She rushed to the party alone, but Richman left and went home to bed. At 4 o’clock he was awakened by impetuous Clara, who had succeeded in breaking into his house. “W’hat could I do,” said Harry later, Speaking to a friend, "when a girl climbs over two fences and breaks into a house, but make up with her?” IRISH TENOR IN FILM John McCormack, the famous tenor, w ill appear shortly in his first talking and singing film. Mr. McCormack is now at his home. Abbey, in Ireland, and the director has already left Hollywood to begin production on locations selected by the tenor. Tom Barry, author of the dialogue for “In Old Arizona,” wrote the story for the singer’s screen debu'L.
