“MUST BE MADNESS”

WANDERER FOUND IN TOWN HALL SMASHED THROUGH WINDOW “1 can’t understand it; it was madness; there must be something wron? with me.” said William Henderson at the Police Court this morning;. Henderson was found in the Town Hall yesterday morning and arrested. The charges were being found without lawful excuse in the enclosed premises of the Town Hall and committing mischief by breaking a pane of glass valued at 7s 6d, the property of the City Council. Henderson, a labourer, aged 25. pleaded guilty to the first charge. “1 don’t remember the window,” he said. “He broke the window to get in,” commented Sub-Inspector McCarthy. “Accused is from West Australia and has been here only three days. It is a coincidence that a year ago he was fined £ 2 for a similar offence to this.”

Accused said that he had been paid off at Westport after a voyage from Britain on the Min. He had walked through the country looking for work, but had struck hard times. The sub-inspector added that Henderson had been found in a little room where the City Council Staff kept stationery. It was quite a climb to enter it.

A fine of £2, in default 14 days’ imprisonment, was imposed on the first charge. Accused was also ordered to make good the damage to the window.
