Great Sport at Epsom
WONDERFUL DERBY FINISH Raima Scores Narrowly THE Auckland Trotting Club’s summer carnival opened at Alexandra l > ark yesterday before a very large attendance. The weather was dull, but fine, and the track in good order, although the footing was holding.
The management of the function was excellent and everything passed off without a hitch. Secretary Mabec had all arrangements in apple-pie order and efficiently attended to his many and arduous duties. President Rowe was again the amiable and hospitable host, while the various officials carried out their duties in a manner that made for success. A special word of praise is due to the handicapper, Mr. George Paul. .Tnr., for he had the w inners well concealed, and in addition provided some wonderful racing. Mr. R. T. Reid, assisted by Mr. Ren Brake, of Whangarei, kept a close guard on the proceedings, but the cleanness of the sport made their duties pleasant. The racing was of a high standard and many of the keen and stirring finishes aroused the spectators to a fine pitch of enthusiasm. The Cup The Cup was a good race, but the pace over the first mile was slow, Dilworth, who acted as pacemaker, reaching the half way station in a tick under 2.22. When it came to the final quarter, the favourite was done with and Machine Gun dashed away and was early hailed as the winner. Then Gold Jacket and Peter Bingen appeared on the scene and in a strenuous finish last year’s winner defeated the champion for the chief honour, while Padlock, coming along with a good rattle, got up to dead-heat with Machine Gun for third berth. Mr. John Rowe presented the handsome gold cup to owner Parkes. and a gold-mounted whip, donated hy A. Kohn, Limited, to driver A Bryce. Great Classic Race The final tussle in the Derby was alone worth the visit to Epsom to witness and only the man in the box could tell how the three colts, .Great Parrish. Ngringo Ngingo and Royal Silk, crossed the wire. The race in the early stages was robbed of a lot of interest through Niogo Ningo, Royal Silk and Purser losing ground, and after seeing the great fight put up by Ngingo Ngingo and Royal Silk over the final pinch, they must be deemed unlucky. However, credit must be given the winner for doing his job well all the way, and the fact that Guy Parrish’s son went away “all square” was a strong factor toward his ultimate success. The win was popular, and after the never-to-be-forgotten struggle Great Parrisli was decorated with the blue ribbon by Mrs. J. W. Ryan. Rowe Cup Still another keen contest was witnessed in the big event for squaregaiters, in which the competitors gave a fine exhibition of the true trotting style. It was a spectacular contest, full of interest all the way, with a wonderful finish between Raima and Rose Bingen, the former hanging on to win by a small margin. Mr. J. H. Lloyd, owner of Raima, received the beautiful gold cup from the Mayor, Mr. G. Baildon, who eulogised the services to the sport rendered by Mr. John Rowe, after whom the race was named, as a tribute to his interest in promoting the welfare of the straight trotter. J. J. Kennerley, who drove the winner, was the recipient of a gold-mounted whip, also the gift of A. Kohn, Ltd. Introductory Trot The English mare, Linnet the Great, won the opening event at good odds. The money was forthcoming for Akanehi £ 870, Writer £BOO, Tamahine £791, Marble Star £6lO and Linnet the Great £443. Marble Star began brilliantly, and was ten lengths clear passing the stands the first time, being followed by Linnet* the Great, Wild Nut, Tamahine, Kolmar, Akanehi, Roma Bingen and Lady Fan. The leader retained his advantage in the next lap, but in the straight Linnet the Great got within three lengths of him, next in order being Tamahine, Kolmar, Wild Nut, there being a gap back to Writer. Linnet the Great passed Marble Star at the half-mile, and turned for home two lengths in front of Tamahine, with Marble Star and Kolmar following, Wild Nut and Lady Pan being handy. Linnet the Great won nicely by a length and a half from Tamahine, Wild Nut being a similar distance away, half a length in front of Lady Fan. Neyt were Marble Star, Kolmar, Roma Bingen, Gold Star and Akanehi. The lastnamed spoiled a good chance by breaking two furlongs from home. December Handicap
Enawah £1,550, was a not pot and driven a confident race she won comfortably. Others in demand were «iueen Elizabeth £1,086. Sir Author £826 and Warspite £779. Enawah went away best and led out of the straight from Nella Dillon, Benefice, Queen Elizabeth. Great Ballin and Warspite. Nella Dillon went to the front down the back and led past the stands from Enawah, Benefice, Warspite, Great Ballin and*Queen Elizabeth. The pair took charge at the back and were just clear at the home turn from Warspite, Queen Elizabeth, Benefice and Sir Author. The favourite held her own in the run to the post and won by a length. There were heads only separating Benefice, Warspite, Queen Elizabeth' and Sir Author, with Great Ballin well back, heading the remainder. Auckland Cup The Dilwofth-Imprint bracket £1,916 was the popular selection for the Auckland Cup, but they failed to fill & place, victory going to the second favourite, Gold Jacket £1,583, while Peter Bingen’s support amounted to £419. At the start Free Advice, Concliff, Linkman and Prince Pointer all broke, Dilworth going out and making play from Machine Gun, Bonny Logan, Peterwah (breaking) and The Abbey. Passing the stands the first time Dilworth was two lengths clear of Machine Gun, Bonny Logan, Linkman, Free Advice, The Abbey, Gold Jacket. Imprint, Kohara, Prince Pointer, Peter Bingen
and Padlock, and this order was maintained right along the back, although the field was closing up. At the stands again Dilworth was still showing the way to Machine Gun, Bonny Logan, Free Advice, Linkman and Gold Jacket, but the back-markers were also prominent, Peter Bingen in particular, pulling hard. Machine Gun moved up t« Dilworth once in the back stretch and this pair were racing stride for stride just ahead of Bonny Logan, Free Advice, Linkman. Gold Jacket, The Abbey, Padlock, Kohara and Peter Bingen. Machine Gun went right away moving across the top, and at the home turn was a length and a-lialf clear of Gold Jacket, Peter Bingen, Dilworth and Padlock. With the pressure on Machine Gun weakened and gave way to Gold Jacket, who finished splendidly to score by a length and a-half from Peter Bingen, who was three parts of a length ahead of the dead-heaters, Machine Gun and Padlock. Next to cross the line were Kohara, Linkman, Dilworth, Free Advice, Prince Pointer and The Abbey. Great Northern Derby
Ngingo Ngingo, Grand Canyon and Royal Silk tangled at the start, and before the field had settled down Pur-
ser left his feet. First Flight went away very smartly and soon was clear of Great Parrish, Kewpie’s Guy and Lydia, and at the back the pacemaker had several lengths the best of Great Parrish, but by the time they had reached the stands the field was in close formation, and following the leaders were Royal Silk, Kewpie’s Guy, Lydia and Grand Canyon. First Flight was still at the head of affairs on turning into the back, and following were Great Parrish, Royal Silk, Ngingo Ngingo, the last-named coming fast, but still being in fourth position at the turn, where First Flight and Great Parrish were together just ahead of Royal Silk. A battle royal was witnessed in the run home and they passed the post in a heap, Great Parrish securing the honours by half a head from Ngingo Ngingo, who was a similar distance in front of Royal Silk. First Flight was four lengths awav third and then came Purser. Grandstand Handicap Most money in the Grandstand Handicap was found for Mountain Dell ( £1,881), while Cornelian (£1,254) and Reremai (£1,029) also came in for good support, Evelyn Locanda (£837) being at nice odds. Concertina and Hal Chimes were slow to begin, and at the stands Cornelian had charge from Concertina, Tony Victor, Stanmoor. Mountain Dell and Brutus, and with a circuit covered the leading pair were on terms just clear of Tony Victor, Mountain Dell (together), Stanmoor, Evelyn Locanda, Brutus and Reremai. Mountain Dell raced away to the front wh'en well into the back stretch and across the top and into the straight was attended by Brutus, Cornelian, Evelyn Locanda, Reremai and Stanmoor. The favourite looked all over a winner in the run to the post, but stopped lamentably in the last 100 yards. Evelyn Locanda unwound a powerful run over the last furlong and carried it through to beat Reremai by a long neck, Stanmoor being in third place three-quarters of a length away. Brutus, Hall Chimes and Mountain Dell led the rest home. Rowe Trotting Cup
Waikaha (£2,074) was a solid favourite in the Rowe Trotting Cup, but victory went to the improving Raima (£1 731). Ngatira and Kempton were a bit slow in getting off the mark and early prominent were Peter McKinney, Raima and Rose Bingen, the first setting such a a hot pace that he was six lengths clear at the stand, where Raima, Rose Bingen, Waikaha, Sister Beatrice, Ngatira, Kempton and Young Blake were in that order. There was not much separating the first three at the stands, but leaving the straight Peter McKinney broke and Raima went to the front and led down the back from Rose Bingen, Peter McKinney, Waikaha, Young Blake, Kempton and Elzear, and with Waikaha moving up this was how they turned into the straight. A good finish resulted in Raima maintaining his advantage to win by a head from Rose Bingen, who defeated Young Blake by a length. Peter McKinney was fourth and succeding him
were Waikaha, Ngatira, Elzear and Kempton. St. Heliers Handicap
Wilma Dillon £ 1.602 was favourite for the St. Heliers Handicap, Wrackler £1,142 being next in order. The divi-dend-payers were Florent £212 and Bessio Logan £204. Oakhampton, Vendome and Acre were slow away, Florent hopping away smartly from Warplane, Gold Dial and First Carbine. At the stands Warplane headed Florent, with Wilma Dillon, First Carbine, Gold Dial. Carmel and Roekburn following in a bunch. Along the back the order was much the same, and Torpedo Huon, who was moving up fast, struck trouble. Warplane tangled near the straight, and Florent led round the bend from Carmel, Wilma Dillon, Bessie Logan, Roekburn and Torpedo Huon. In a great finish Florent hung on to win by a head from Bessie Logan, with the unlucky Torpedo Huon a neck away third. Then came Wrackler, Imprint, Wilma Dillon, Carmel and The Shrew. Akarana Handicap Great Peter £2218 was a hot pot for the Akarana Handicap, the bestbacked of the ethers being Richore £939, Warspite £BB4 and Nella Dillon £7Ol. Respect did not go away, and Delavan Bill and Great Ballin broke early. Nella Dillon was quick-
est away and led from Warspite, Richore, Childe Audubon and Haerangi Pai. Passing the stand Nella Dillon led Richore, TJrsuline, Childe Audubon, Trustworthy, Haerenga Pai and Great Peter. Richore hit the front along the back, from Nella Dillon, but the latter came again and was first into the straight from Richore, Great Peter, Trustworthy and Haerenga Pai, with Hal Chimes, who was badly stopped early, making up ground. Once in line for the box, Great Peter sailed along comfortably in front to win “on his head” by a little over a length, from Nella Dillon, with Richore a neck away third. Then followed Haerenga Pai, Great Ballin, Hal Chimes (all close up), TJrsuline and Childe Audubon.
