The disadvantage of an outside position in a fairly big field at the sixfurlong barrier at Ellerslie was made evident when Aspiring and Lady Quex two very speedy gallopers, were com-’ pelled to race on the outside of three or four horses all the way. They drew number 13 and 14 marble, respectively and -with several horses inside them getting away smartly they failed to overcome the difficulty provided by the draw. Aspiring has gone South, and will race at Marton on Wednesday .*! e r there! But Lady Quex is still with us, remember.
Tito hacks that have some pretensions to stamina are Prince of Orange and Motere, and they are to take on Duellona m the ten furlongs Waitemata Hack on Mondav. Motere is a! ways doing his best at tlio end of his races so the extra journey will suit hl ™- Prince of Orange finished very solidly when he ran second to Richfield at Te Awamutu a fortnight ago and with a strong rider at the weight he may be prominent at the end.
