Summer Cup Day

MONDAY’S FINE PROGRAMME Review of the Fields FE Auckland Racing Club’s summer meeting will be resumed at Ellerslie on Monday, when another fine programme will be staged. Excellent fields are engaged all round, and even the small four-horse race in the King’s Plate promises to be a contest worthy of the occasion. The going will be better than on the opening day. “EarlyBird’s” review of the prospects are given below. nAH FERGUSSON HANDICAP • ** Of £400; 1 mile Richfield ~30 The recent fine efforts of Richfield Tuku .... 7 o Imperial will be remembered when backers e L at x° n • • •. J 0 Prince .. . J J are endeavouring to sum this one ■v® < h r ~ 1 ° n * * X « iTS'llhu ;: 7 I up, and they could not do better Snowplane' .' 7 0 Greenaway . 7 5 than stick to him. Imperial Prince Always ... 7 0 Spring Abbey 7 a ran probably his best race to date Some Lady .70 Indolent ... 7 4 j n the Queen’s Plate on Boxing Bay, and on that showing will be prominent. Those below are not good hacks, but they should be able to make a race of it at the weights, the pick being Luminary. Llyn Bhu, Greenaway, Spring Abbey, Indolent, Tuku, Relation, Antique .and Some Lady. Backers will declare in favour of: RICHFIELD and IMPERIAL PRINCE 10 97 KING’S PLATE Of £500; weight-for-age; 1 mile Historic ..92 Small, but classy, sums up this mile race at weightToxeuma . . 9 0 for-age terms, no penalties or allowances being provided Eaglet 2 ' . 711 for. Historic has not come back to his form of the g ’ spring, and for that reason he will probably be the outsider of the party. Toxeuma finished right up fourth in the sprint on Thursday, and as he can run out a fine mile he may bother the others. .Hunting Cry won over ten furlongs here in the spring, in good company, and his sprint success on Thursday indicated that he is at his best. Eaglet is a brilliant filly, and remembering her fine showing against Pink Coat over the same ground in October, she is going to be the hardest to head off. The race seems to favour the three-year-olds: EAGLET and HUNTING CRY |l7 PONSONBY HURDLES • Of £500; 2 miles Pangolin . .10 11 The top-weight, Pangolin, should Catonian . . 99 Prince Lu .. 10 9 no t be discarded on account of his Importer ..95 King’s Guard 10 7 fall the fi rs t day. As previously „ , Clockwork*. 110 n pointed out in these columns, it Ra i?e p Sto ..* 9 0 Archeen ... 9 9 takes an exceptional horse to win Glenotus ..90 over the Ellerslie sticks at the first time of asking when the ground is anything but firm. Pangolin was going well enough when he crashed to advise his supporters to be loyal. Prince Lu is sticking on better, and King’s Guard won so well on Thursday that he will have to be reckoned with again. Kawini should be all the better for the race, and so should Catonian and Importer. Archeen, Rahepoto and Lady Spalpeen, may be the elect of the others, but the leaning is toward: PANGOLIN and KING’S GUARD O 7 SUMMER CUP £•* Of £1,000; U miles Star The handieapper has started very Royal Stranger . . 9 1L high, and with Star Stranger up Doulton ..73 Pegaway ... 9 8 1,, 9.11 h e will have to put his best * * I „ Seatown” “.If feet forward—and he will, for he j aleux .*.*..* ? 0 White Fan g . 8 5 was never better. Vertigern will Mithra .... 7 0 be well suited by this trip, and as he is well he may be one of the hard ones. Seatown won the Manawatu Cup on Thursday, and this shows that he is very well. White Fang may see it out, and Panther and Merry Mint will like the distance. The Hawk is not greatly fancied, and Royal Doulton and Spearmiss will need to improve on Thursday’s performance to win. Amor, Jaleux and Transformer may be the pick of the others. Those that will not lack friends are: SEATOWN, MERRY MINT and STAR STRANGER o co CRITERION HANDICAP Of £500; 5 furlongs Biddy’s Boy 8 7 There is some promising material Betterment . 7 4 Awaken ... 8 4 engaged in the two-year-old race. Tremetus Auctioneer ..70 Tenterden . 7 5 has as much pace as anything, and of the remander a good word can be said for Sight Braft, Ojl King, Open Cheque, Nimble, Tenterden, Betterment, Hard Words and Brastic. Two that will come m for enthusiastic support are: AWAKEN and BIDDY’S BOY 9 *>7 WAITEMATA HANDICAP *'•*'* Of £400; 1i miles Duellona ... 9 0 The distance of this event has Thurnus .... 7 0 Prinde of managed to keep down the size Motere .* - • 7 0 Orange - 7 5 of this fle i d , for which many will • ■ ‘ ° Nassock®.'.* !7 0 be thankful. Prince of Orange is next, at a difference of 211 b, and on his T-e Awamutu running he may be second best. All the others, 11 of them, are qn the minimum, the pick of these being Sea Song, Antique, Thurnus, Motere, Pedestal and Alloy. The public may go for this pair: DUELLONA and PRINCE OF ORANGE A 97 ELECTRIC HANDICAP ■ Of £600; 6 furlongs Cimabue ..92 The sprint race has again Leitrim ... 7 0 The Raider . 8 7 attracted a. nice even field. Cima- Polyxena ..70 Great * I ri bue went a good race the first day * X 9 Lady’® Boy* 1 0 without actually being dangerous. Takutama *I 7 0 Vallar ... 7 6 Great Star has done very little Tea Time ..70 Knightlike . 7 0 galloping prior to Boxing Bay, so that he should be greatly improved. Lady Quex was badly drawn the first day, and Knightlike, Lady’s Boy, Leitrim, Polyxena, Awarere and Tea Time read the best of the remainder. It is an awkward race to sum up, but one cannot do better than stick to the first day’s form. Backers, therefore, may declare in favour of: LADY QUEX and GREAT STAR C 1 7 PLUNKET HANDICAP Of £500; 1 mile Panther ... 9 4 This has attracted the biggest Flying Prince 7 12 Goshawk . . 9 0 field of the day, and it is another of Ghoucas . 711 *m?Q« * I 1 r those intricate problems so often rlri * • 7 8 Marble' King 8 2 presented at Ellerslie. Maori Boy has not been doing things lately, and Eager Rose has been consistent, and with her rise is not out of it. She won well the first day. Marble King ran a gpod race in the Te Awamutu Cup, and on that showing can be expected to go well. King Midas is a useful sort in this type of race, but Hyde Park has not done anything of note recently. Richfield is well up in the weights now, and the Ti Tree-Le Choucas bracket will have friends. Gemlight, Flying Prince, Taneriri, King Emerald, and Royal Parade are most fancied of the remainder. Bestbacked may be: EAGER ROSE, MARBLE KING and GOSHAWK
