Concentrate Redeems Himself, But Was Rather Lucky
Star Stranger Should Have Won
Star Stranger appeared to be a good thing beaten in the Auckland Cup. Instead of being beaten a head by Concentrate (who was at a double-figure quotation), he ought to have won. That was a pretty general summing , up after yesterday’s big race at tillers- j lie. It was a great finish to a thrilling contest, and over the final quarter the crowd was on its feet. The field of a dozen runners I Attracted a great deal of attention j when they went out for their pro- j liminary, but most of the horses were j restricted to half pace in their gallop i past the spectators. The defections j on the course were Vertigern, iScatown; Goshawk and Jaleux. Star Stranger was a hot favourite, being entrusted with a whole heap of money. The pool was a big one, nearly a fourth of the way to six figures, being £ 6,215 in excess of last year's total, and about .-£4,500 less than the record Cup turnover in the boom year, 1920. £ Star Stranger 6,170 Paquito 3,716 In the Shade 2,784 Prodice 2.758 Corinax 2,558 H istoric-Panther bracket . 1,588 Concentrate 1,417 Count Cavour .. 1,283 The outsider of the field was Merry Mint, with £633, his quotation being in the vicinity of half a hundred to one. There was little delay at the barrier, and when they were let go Concentrate was in the van, being followed out of the tapes by Corinax, Panther, Merry Mint, Prodice, Historic, j Paquito, Count Cavour, Star Stranger. Shrewd, Spearmiss and In the Shade. At the end of a furlong Panther had run to the front and he led across the top and into the straight, and passing the post the first time he was nearly a length in front of Merry Mint, with a gap back three lengths to Corinax and Concentrate, with Prodice, Historic, Star Stranger, Paquito, Shrewd, Count Cavour, In the Shade and Spearmiss following in that order. At the six furlongs Merry Mint and Panther were making play together, clear of Concentrate and Corinax (together), Historic and Star Stranger (together), Shrewd, Paquito, Prodice, Spearmiss, Count Cavour and In the Shade, the last-named having commenced to fall back again. Starting to Race Approaching the three furlongs Corinax moved up, and as they swung into the straight Merry Mint, Corinax and Panther were in a line, just in front of Concentrate, with. Shrewd, Spearmiss, Star Stranger, Prodice (wide out) and Paquito all handy. Below the distance Shrewd, Paquito and Corinax were prominent, but then Concentrate came through and at the half distance was clear, with Prodice, Count Cavour (both wide out) and Shrewd at the head of the others, and Star Stranger starting to come through on the rails. A furlong from the judge Concentrate was still clear, but then Star Stranger commenced to fly, and at every stride 1 e was catching Concentrate. Less than a furlong from home Concentrate held an advantage of about three lengths 'over the favourite, and it was this early break that gave him the stake. * At every stride Star Stranger was AT WAIPUKURAU HIGH COURT’S SURPRISE Press Association NAPIER, Thursday. The Waipukurau Jockey Club’s summer meeting was held today in beautiful weather, and there was a large attendance. The course was in excellent order. catching him, and at the finish it was only the judge who could say which had won. The decision went to
Concentrate by a head. In the meantime Prodice had carried Count Cavour out wide in the straight, tl o latter staying on with remarkab-e gameness, and he got third money, only half a length behind the second horse, and Shrewd and Prodice were right up. Next in order were Corinax. Paquito. and a gap back to a bunch comprising Merry Mint. Historic. Panther and Spearmiss, with In the Shade well back last. It was a splendid contest, and the pace was on throughout, Panther being forced to adopt the role of pacemaker. The first quarter occupied 26 3-3. the six furlongs 1.1 S 1-5, mile 1.4 4 l-<>. mile and a-quarter 2.11 1-5, mile and a-half 2.37 1-5, and the two miles 3.27. The last mile took 1.42 4-5, and the final half-mile 49 4-5. It was good going on a track totally dead. There was some interference noticed after the field had gone a little over a couple of furlongs, and it was officially announced that Paquito ran into the fence and came back on to Star Stranger. That made the Martian gelding’s performance all the more meritorious. His First Win This success marked E. Ludlow’s first victory in this rich handicap. He rode a judicious race on Concentrate, and did not rush him when the straight hove in sight. Two furlongs from
home he asked liis mount for an effort, and so well did he respond that in quick time he had gathered in the leaders and then run to the front. Both horse and rider took up the challenge when Star Stranger threatened danger. The failure of Concentrate in the New Zealand Cup was taken as a criterion that Australian form was poor. Now, as expected, the opinion may require revision. Star Stranger did all that was asked of him, and he might have won had Heed made his effort a shade earlier. Over the last furlong he was flying, but his effort appeared to be a bit delayed. Count Cavour ran a great race, coming from well back over the last halfmile, and he was a bit unlucky in being carried out by Prodice. The Count liung on better than the majority, and it is plain that when it comes to a question of stamina he cannot altogether be left out of calculations. Shrewd ran up to his track effort of last Tuesday morning, and it was only over the final 100yds that he weakened into fourth place, but he was less than three lengths behind the winner. ITodice was right up fifth, after having covered more ground than anything else in the race. Under the circumstances her effort was satisfactory; the final pinch found her wanting. Corinax looked a distinct possibility three furlongs from home, and perhaps had his rider waited a little longer he might have got him into money. Paquito was a disappointment, but there was some excuse for him. As indicated previously he is a difficult horse to ride, and this was evident when he took charge; of his rider shortly after the start. He finished seventh, fairly well back. Historic was never a possibility once the pace was clapped on, and it is
apparent that he is nowhere near so wel , l a 5, in th e spring. His stable mate. Panther, ran just as well, although he was probably a beaten „, se JY hen he was called upon to make his own running. Spearmiss failed in the straight, and tor such o good stayer her finishing effort was lamentably weak. Perhaps »t e T7nf S P ,° ne of l since her good efforts at Riccarton. Merry Mint was beaten barl!v e d A stan . ce - al ? d In the Shade ran bad!\. He, too. does not appear to got over his gruelling race in the Aew Zealand Cup.
