KICKED A POLICEMAN

CHRISTMAS EVE STRUGGLE MONTH’S HARD LABOUR From Our Own Correspondent WHANGAREL, Today. In the Whar-garei Police Court this morning, before Messrs. H. Hemphill and J. Walker, J.P.’s, John Hewin, a single man, was charged with using obscene language, being drunk iu Cameron Street, and resisting a constable. Senior-Sergeant O’Grady said that at 11.40 p.m. on Christmas Eve several Maoris complained of accused following them and a number of women and using obscene language. Constable Beasley told Hewin to go away, but he ignored the warning. ■ The constable arrested accused and put him in a taxi. Accused fought until the police station was reached and kicked the constable in the face.

Accused pleaded guilty to all charges, but said he knew nothing of the obscene language. The Bench said that if accused had been a married man they would have considered a fine, but they were not going to have a single man resist a constable and assault him. On the charges of drunkenness and using obscene language accused was convicted and discharged, and on the charge of resisting the constable he was sentenced to one month’s hard labour. .
