HAIL AND FAREWELL!

“THE MONTH” MOURNS ITS DEAD LEADER FINE MEMORIAL ISSUE Hail and farewell! "The Month.” the journal of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Auckland, mourns the loss of its founder, the late Dr. Henry W. Cleary, Bishop of Auckland, in fitting stanzas, and in the first Issue since the nqted prelate’s death, devotes its rages and its pictures to a resume of his life and work.

Without disclosing the identity of the editorial pen, the memorial issue of “The Month” is a particularly fine production journalistically and typographically. Its anonymity is happily chosen, for the high idealism and wealth of spiritual thought which was so skillfully woven into the journal by the late bishop himself is so closely emulated that full justice is done to the memory of its departed leader.

Editorially “The Month” refers feelingly to the 20 years during which Dr. Cleary was the Father of the Diocese, and to the 11£ years during which he had controlled “The Month” in the interests of his flock. Visioning a deserted editorial chair and a Eacile pen so lately laid aside, the journal applies to the late bishop one of his own favourite quotations: "Life’s race well run. Life’s work well done.”

From the cradle to the grave, the life of Henry William Cleary is traced in clear-cut and picturesque language. The singular spiritual equipment and mental facility with which he was endowed, and the manner in which he utilised these golden gifts for the welfare of his people are covered in this obituary sketch. His studies; his special recognition from Rome; his rise to ecclesiastical eminence; his incessant toil; his illness; his last hours; his passing into the hands of his Creator; his journey to the grave; the mangificent spontaneity of the public tribute; the homage of all denominations; the committal to the earth; Requiescat in pace! A memorable pen picture of the life of a great man, written obviously with intimate knowledge of his habits and his manners.
