BRITONS HELD IN GAOL
MIGRATION DIFFICULTIES IN AMERICA BORDER PRISONS CROWDED Reed. 9 a.m. WASHINGTON, Wed. Lively interest is being shown by the Labour Department in the reports of the London “Daily Chronicle’s” campaign against the alleged detention in American prisons of British citizens who get into difficulties under the immigration laws. The officials express confidence that no situation has arisen to cause friction between the two countries, although it is admitted that the prisons, especially on the border towns, are crowded with persons awaiting deportation under the recently changed laws.
The Department of Justice, however, has received no information concerning the alleged ill-treatment of British prisoners. The immigration commissioner, Mr. W. Husband, says: “1 do not know of any British subjects who have been detained, except for violation of the immigration laws. Unfortunately, we cannot help that.”
