SCHEME OF REBATES
SILK AND SUGAR DUTIES IN BRITAIN TARIFF TRUCE QUESTION Reed. 9 a.m. LONDON, Wed. The Chancellor of the Exchequer, Mr. Philip Snowden, announced in the House of Commons yesterday, that if any silk or sugar duties should be repealed it would he necessary to take the exceptional course of proposing a scheme of rebates to meet the position of the holders of duty stocks.
Similarly, if any of the McKenna duties were repealed the drawbacks on duty-paid exports would continue as was the case in 1924.
A member asked if the Cabinet intended to agree to a tariff truce, subject to the approval of Parliament; also, would it be submitted to the Imperial Conference. The President of the Board of Trade, Mr. W. Graham, replied in the negative to the second part of the question. He said any general agreement would be laid before the House for ratification.
