An intoxicated fisherman, George Knowles, put out to sea from Stonehaven in a small boat and braved a fierce gale. Spectators were convinced that the man would lose his life and called out the lifeboat crew, who went to the rescue. Knowles refused assistance and returned safely to the harbour unaided. He was charged with proceeding to sea in a storm while drunk ar_d by his reckless conduct endangering his own life, also with committing a breach of the peace. Accused pleaded guilty and was sentenced to two -weeks’ imprisonment without the option of a fine.
