M.P.’S ARM BROKEN
SUPPED ON DECK OF FISHING BOAT INTERRUPTED LAUNCH CRUISE Missing his footings when jumping from the jetty to the deck of a fishing boat at Mechanic’s Bay yesterday morning, Mr. H. R. Jenkins, M.P. for Parnell, had an arm broken in two places. The injured limb was set at the Auckland Hospital and Mr. Jenkins was reported today to be in a satisfactory condition. He had been out in his new cruising launch Shenandoah to Islington Bay and put back to Mechanic’s Bay at 9 a.m. yesterday. He went into the Power Boat Association's shed to ring up, leaving the launch moored about 100 yards from the jetty. After ringing up he stood on the jetty and called to his small son to come and get him in the dinghy. As the dinghy could not get alongside, Mr. Jenkins jumped to the deck of a fishing craft moored at the jetty. He missed his footing and fell into the water,’ striking his head against the tishiag-boat and fracturing his right arm in two places. He was almost unconscious in the water when he was rescued by friends and conveyed to the public hospital.
In view of the rumour that he had been struck by the starting handle when the engine of his cruising launch backfired, Mr. Jenkins states that the engine starts with a push button and does not crank. It was Mr. Jenkins’s intention to leave yesterday with a party of 12 people on what would have been the maiden cruise of the Shenandoah. Claimed to be the largest pleasure launch in New Zealand, the Shenandoah was launched last Saturday.
