ENVELOPED IN FLAMES
TWO MEN INJURED AT ONEHUNGA
CAROL CONVEYANCE DAMAGED Two men escaped serious injury when a hurricane lamp burst into flames and damaged a motortruck and a garage extensively on Christmas Eve,. 'T'HE truck and the garage were the property of W. Sutherland and Co., Onehuaga. It was intended to use the truck for the conveyance of a party of carol singers from the Onehunga branch of the Salvation Army. Preparations for the purpose were being made.' by the driver, Mr. H. Dowling, assisted by an employee, Mr. G. Claydon. A hurricane lamp was providing light for the men when they were engaged in filling a tank with benzine. It expoded, and the flames enveloped both men. Mr. Claydon’s hands and boots were burned, and his eyebrows singed A leg injury was received by Mr. Dowling. Both men suffered from shock.
The fire was prevented from spreading to buildings in the vicinity by the Onehunga Eire Brigade, which arrived quickly. The truck and the garage were damaged considerably.
