Paganelli Has His Chance in Palmerston North Stakes

Opposition From the Two-Year-Olds

Quite an interesting event is that to be staged at Awapuni tomorrow. That is the Palmerston North Stakes, a weight-for-age race, with penalties and allowances, the distance being six furlongs. On the face of it the event looks like a benefit for Paganelli, for the opposition is rather weak, although there are one or two runners capable cf springing a surprise. It is to be contested by a small field and the vlub will be fortunate indeed if it is called upon to pay out two dividends, for the number of horses left in on forfeit night was ten. At least three of these will be absentees, for they are at Ellerslie. They are Cimabue, Hunting Cry and Duellona. This will leave the following in as possible runners: PAGANELLI, syrs. ADMIRAL DRAKE, 3yrs. CONSENT, 4yrs. MISS RANSOM, 4yrs. ROI DE VAL, 4yrs. CHRYSOLOGY, 2yrs. PRINCESS BETTY, 2yrs. It will be seen from this list that the opposition to the Te Kapa sprinter is the reverse of strong, so he should make amends for his Feilding defeat.

Both Cimabue and Kaihoro finished in front of Paganelli in the Feilding' Stakes a month ago, the turf that day being on the soft side, which fact must have had a great deal to do with the result. In any case that race was an unsatisfactory sort of affair, many shrewd judges being dissatisfied at the outcome, quite apart from any financial considerations they might have had. Paganelli will be at a short quotation, of course, but small fish are sweet, and there is that Feilding loss to be made up. Admiral Drake is more than a useful, three-year-old, and if he had been kept to sprinting instead of tackling the Derby distance he might have developed into one of the best. It may not be too late for him to do so now. But frankly, there does not seem anything in the field, outside of the two-year-olds, even capable of extending the Lord Quex gelding on a track in anything like fair order. They are Chrysology and Princess Betty, and the very fact that trainer

F. Davis has elected to keep him in Ihe South instead of bringing him North to face Praise in the Foal Stakes suggests that he is not yet at his best, or, on the other hand, that he falls a bit below that standard. After the last Wellington meeting Chrysology was boomed as likely to develop into one of the best of this season’s two-year-olds, but obviously he has not come to this standard. That is the only reason surely why his owner would give a go-by to such rich prizes as the £1,250 Foal Stakes and £I,OOO Royal Stakes.

The other youngster referred to, Princess Betty, is practically in the same boat, for she, too, was left in the Foal Stakes. This youngster ran a very good second to Praise in the

C.J.C. Welcome Stakes, but although a solid customer she does not impress as one likely to beat the best of her own age. Next season there may be a different story, but that will have to be seen.
