SUMMER RACING
Auckland Carnival Opens GESTURE WINS FOAL STAKES Hunting Cry Surprises Till' Auckland Racing Club’s summer meeting opened today at Ellerslie in fine weather, there being a large attendance. The course was slow after the week’s rain. Takanini training camp scored first blood when it won the opening event, the Queen’s Plate, with Vali who led Richfield, Count Palatine and Duellona at the post, the lastnamed being rather unlucky. Seven smart two-year-olds contested the Foal Stakes, and Gesture scored fairly comfortably from Cylinder and Biddy’s Boy, the winner staying on splendidly. The favourite, Praise, ran wide on the home turn and finished last. The Cup was a spectacular race and produced a thrilling finish. Concentrate, who was at good odds, defeated the favourite, Star Stranger, by a narrow margin, with the . game and consistent Count Cavour filling third place. The Grafton Hurdles provided a keen finish between King's Guard, Prince Lu and Importer, the first mentioned winning a narrow decision. Favourites were overshadowed at the finish of the Railway Handicap by Hunting Cry and Great Star, the former scoring well to pay double figures.
Awaken, a stable mate of Silvermine, won the two-vear-old Nursery Handicap in splendid style from a smart filly, Nimble, who tried to win all the way. Eager Rose downed a warm favourite in Eaglet for the Christmas Handicap. Prince Val. a well-fancied competitor, liad his chances extinguished at the start.
