STRATFORD CARD

NEW YEAR MEETING Press Association NEW PLYMOUTH, Monday. Acceptances for the first day of the Stafford meeting are:

Perfect Turf The formation of some new training tracks at Wingratui recalls the famous gallops laid down by Lord George Bentinck when he was dictator of the English turf. He ploughed out the ground, and then, on a layer of tan, placed back the soil, and then no more tan a top-dressing of soil, and so made the most perfect turf ever seen in England. Tan imparts buoyancy to the going, and a light dressing of it is the best method of improving grass tracks. Cimabue's Good Effort Cimabue ran an excellent race in the Flying Handicap at Egmont on Wednesday. He carried 61b more than his Kailway Handicap impost, and though beaten by the light-weight Knightlike, he lost few admirers for his important ♦engagement at Ellerslie. As he beat Lady Quex. the ruling favourite for the Railway, he should. on paper, again defeat the mare at Auckland, even though he does meet Lady Quex on 31b worse terms. Riding in England According to the latest tiles to hand from London, the crack American jockey Earle Sande, has accepted a retainer to ride for one of the most powerful racing stables in Great Britain. Sande has had a most remarkable career as a jockey, and it is little wonder that he has long been regarded by good judges as one of the best horsemen in the world. In 192$ Sande announced that he had definitely decided to retire from race riding. At that time his average for lo years’ riding was amazing. He had ridden ;i winner out of every four mounts, and it is computed that he had. won 9*21 races. But Sande did not stay out of the saddle for long, and when fie resumed riding he was just as successful as ever.
