KILLED AT CROSSING
MOTOR-TRUCK HITS TRAIN
ONE DEAD, ONE BADLY HURT Press Association TIMARU, Monday.
Shortly after 11 o’clock this morning an accident occurred on the Winchester railway crossing, 15 miles north of Timaru, as a result of which Mr. Horace William Westaway, aged 24, a married man residing at Milford, lost his life. John McAuliffe, aged 19, also residing at Milford, is in hospital in. a serious condition. The two men were in a motortruck, which was driven by McAuliffe, who apparently did not see or hear the approach of the Christ-church-Dunedin express. McAuliffe drove into the crossing. The truck struck the engine of the train. It was hurled against a telegraph-pole 'and completely wrecked.
The occupants of the truck, -who were obviously seriously injured, were conveyed to the Timaru Hospital, where Mr. Westaway died late in the afternoon. The condition of the youth McAuliffe, who is suffering from a fracture of the skull and abdominal injuries, is serious.
