Now the lists are almost filled and yesterday a furious rush set in, shops being kept busv right, up to closing time. Today is quieter along the Queen Street front but there are prospects of fast work tonight when the sudden memory that Aunt Susan or Cousin Charlie has not been provided for will send many dashing to the nearest shop. Useful gifts at moderate prices are in big demand this year, according to the manager of one of Auckland's leading shops this morning. The sea son was late in starting owing to the wet weather at the beginning of the month, but now trade lias brightened until it is quite equal to that of last year. There is a swing in favour of imitation jewellery for women this season, and for men a slightly cheaper tie than usual is the demand. Toilet goods and handbags fill the problem of what to give the “girl friend.” The old custom of sending Christmas cards has revived this season, and many are sending calendars to their friends. Radio will be introduced to many families during the Christmas holidays. when special sessions are being broadcast from all stations. Few portable sets for campers have been sold, however. although complete cabinet sets for home reception have met with a ready demand.
