NATIVE VAGRANT SENT TO GAOL “1 have a place to stay.'' said Thomas Kelly, charged at the Police Court this morning with vagrancy. ‘ Yes, I dare say 1 can give you one,” countered Mr. F. K. Hunt. S.M.. imposing a term of three months’ imprisonment. Kelly, a seaman, aged 33. was charged with being idle and disorderly, having insufficient visible means of support. After some meditation he pleaded not guilty. Constable Fowke said that Kelly was roaming the streets and causing a great deal of trouble. One woman in Parnell was terrified of him, and he kept on bothering her. When accosted, he always said that lie was going to catch a ship on the next day. Only yesterday he had started a fight in the street.
“That’s enough evidence.” commented the magistrate. as SubInspector McCarthy called another constable. “I suppose he has been in gaol often enough before.”
The Sub-Inspector: Just 47 times.
