MANY MEN DISMISSED
POSITION OF RAILWAY WORKERS
PROTEST TO MINISTER
More than 100 men were dismissed today from the Otahuhu Railway Workshops. A protest has been forwarded to the Minister of Railways, reminding him of the Government’s promise to relieve unemployment. The member for Manukau, Mr. W. J. Jordan, this morning sent the following telegram to the Hon. W. B. Taverner, Minister of Railways:— “We regret to learn that more than 100 men are being dismissed today from the Otahuhu Railway Workshops. Unemployment is serious in Auckland, and as work to able and willing men was promised, we will be obliged to you for instructions regarding these men, many of whom are married. Private employment is very scarce.” These men were engaged at the workshops following the declaration of the Prime Minister that work would he provided for all men fit for work, who registered at the nearest bureau. The Government announced at the time that unemployment in the Dominion -would cease within six ■weeks.
