DRY SPELL NEEDED
MAINTAINING RATES FOR DAIRY PRODUCE MR. GOODFELLOW’S VIEW Special to THE SUX HAMILTON. Today. j How weather conditions within the next month or so in Australia and New Zealand will bear on the dairy produce market is explained by Mr. William Goodfellow. managing director of Amalgamated Dairies, Limited, in a monthly report to shareholders in the New Zealand Co-operative Dairy Company, Limited. Record seasons are being experienced by the Commonwealth and the Dominion. Air. Goodfellow points out. The large buying interests in London would take every advantage of the position. Multiple shops had held light stocks, but the anxiety of some importers to sell had caused a continually dragging market. In the past month the amount of New Zealand butter sold increased considerably above the previous period’s sales, but it showed a decline on the November-December sales of 1928. At this time last year, however. Australian butter was in short supply. Some requirements of buyers were this year being met by the Australian commodity. which was 4s to 6s less than New Zealand’s best. Fortunately, Canada had this season bought substantial shipments of New’ Zealand butter. The earlier prices compared more than favourably with the London clearance. It is Mr. Goodfellow’s view that dairy produco prices will decline immediately in January, February and March unless there is a long spell of dry weather in New’ Zealand and Australia. In the past month the cheese market has been consistently slow', although it appeared to be in_ a stronger position than butter. New Zealand cheese, at this time of the year, has almost a monopoly of the United Kingdom trade, and will be in the same position for six months more.
