land team two years ago, was not in Auckland’s Plunket Shield side this year. Roy took three wickets for 49. “SMITHY” HITS OUT The chief feature of Ponsonby’s second innings was the 56 not out which the captain, S. G. Smith, hit up. “Smithy” was in a particularly carefree mood, and as a result he had j several “let-offs” in the field, but he ! and the spectators derived immense enjoyment from those big hits of his which did come off. When stumps were drawn for the day shortly after six o’clock Ponsonby had five wickets down for 120. Details: PONSONBY First innings 157 Second Innings. NELSON AND M.C.C. DRAW

HOME BATSMEN COLLAPSE DULEEPSINHJI’S CENTURY Press Association NELSON, Today. | The match between the M.C.C. team i and Nelson was continued on Satur- ; day in excellent weather and ended in i a draw. The outfield was slow after j rain but the wicket, which had been | covered, was fast. ' Nelson resumed batting with five wickets down for 131 runs. However. ! the rest of the innings was nothing but a procession of batsmen from the pavilion to the crease and back, the remaining live wickets falling for 11 runs. Barratt was in good form with the ball and clean bowled four batsmen in three overs. The innings closed for 142 when Duleepsinhji took a splendid catch in the slips. Tho visitors declared their first innings closed at 248 for six wickets. i In the second innings Nelson lost six . wickets for 83 runs.

Dawson and Gilligan opened for the visitors. There was a sensational incident when J. Newman bowled Gilligan with the third ball of his first over when one run had been scored.

From the first Duleepsinhji treated the bowling with little respect, hitting up 30 in 20 minutes. At luncheon one wicket was down for 40 runs, Dawson being then 10. The batsmen continued after luncheon, Duleepsinhji scoring at double the pace of his partner. He scored runs from nearly every ball, the crowd applauding every stroke. He varied his shots all round the wicket —well-timed leg shots, pretty cutting and hard driving. It was really a wonderful exhibition. At 80 he gave a chance in the longfield; otherwise his was a chanceless innings. He reached 100 in 106 minutes, hitting II fours and a six.

After passing his century Duleepsinhji hit hard at everything and was caught in the longfield for 137. He was given great applause. Dawson was very steady, scoring mostly with drives. He hit one ball out of the ground into the sea. Hawkes and Newman had him thinking at times, but he gave no chance. There was keen interest. when Woolley went in, but be was dismissed lbw before he got going. He hit a pretty four to the leg boundary off the first ball. The spectators were disappointed at his failure. Worthington and Barratt hit out, the latter sending nearly every shot to the boundary. At tea Gilligan declared with the score 248 for six wickets.

Nelson could do little against the English bowling, S. Newman and R. Newman being the only ones to appear confident. The former played nice shots to the off at Nichols’s expense. At stumps Nelson had six wickets down for 63. The match was drawn. Scores are:— NELSON First Innings.
