TOP-GRADE TENNIS
GAMES ON THE GRASS COURTS UNIVERSITY’S NARROW WIN Tennis enthusiasts witnessed another closely contested round of the Auckland Lawn Tennis Association’s 'ntr-club competitions on Saturday. Showers the previous night, and cloudy weather in the morning, had made the prospects of play remote, but sunlight and a stiff breeze in the afternoon effectually dried the courts. Keen enthusiasm was displayed by tho many competitors, who on the whol egave a creditable exhibition. Attention for the most part was focussed upon the A grade contest, played at Stanley Street. The teams were Parnell and University, both of whom gav-e exhibitions of splendid tennis. Dogged determination and clean sportsmanship was the feature of the play between these teams, and so closely were the games contested that the issue hung in the balance almost until th last moment, when University just managed to register a victory. Probably the most attractive play of the day was to be seen in the doubles. One of the finest games was in the men’s doubles between Andrews and Bowden, of Varsity, and Litherland and Bushel, of Parnell. The Varsity pair combined excellently, and although at times they were inclined to be erratic, their play was forceful and confident. Some splendid games were also witnessed in the women’s doubles, one of the best being between Misses Frankham and Sanderson, of Parnell, and Misses Macintosh and Adams, of Varsity. The play in the combined doubles was of an unusually high standard. Results were as follow: GRADE A Parnell v. University.—Men’s singles: A. S. Lamb lost to A. C.
