SMALL YACHT RACING
SAILING AT KOHI TAMAKI CLUB EVENTS Small yachts, from ISft downward, and outboard motor-boats raced at Kohimarama. on Saturday under th« Tam&ki Yacht Club’s pennant. The weather was ideal for the siding craft, though the water was rather choppy for the outboards. A reliable sou’west breeze prevailed all the afiernoon and sent the yachts round in tine style. All events were started and finished off the Kohimarama Wharf. The officials were:—Starter and timekeeper. Mr. W. A. Wilkinson; judge. Mr. I*. Wild. Details are as follow: —The course for yachts was from the s an at Kohi. Wharf, thence round a mark off St. Heliers Wharf, round the Bean Rock light, round the Bastion 1> jo\ . and to the finish off Kohi Wharf, twice, round, except for the Z class, which went round once only. V and S. Classes. -The IC-footers and 18-footers made a splendid start, Desdemona, Namu. Sceptre and Scud crossing in a body. Maroro. an M boat, was allowed to race, and was handicapped two minutes behind scratch. Rangatira was several seconds late. Finishing times were:—Maroro (Smin behind scratch), 4.25.45; Namu (3mtn). 4.32.10; Scud (Bmin), 4.32.27; Desdemona (3min), 4.34.20); Sceptre and Rangatim did not finish. Results:-^—Scud, 1: Namu. 2; Desdemona, 3. It was decided to award a special prize to Maroro in addition to ordinary prizes for the others. T, X and Y Classes. —Fire boats i Ontested the event for 14-footers. The order of starting was: Ramona. Rahiri 11., Opali, Valencia. Rita 11.. all close together. Finishing times were:—Opah (scr). 4.44.33; Rahiri 11. (4min), 4.43.10; Ramon;* (scr), 4.53.1; Valencia (llmin), 5.3.20. Results (Y Class): —Rahiri 11., 1; Opah, 2; Valencia, 3. Results T and X Classes:—Ramona, J. Z Class.— The Takapuna class was represented by five boats, which started in this order: Kitty, Delpliine. Tio, Oi and Me Too. Finishing times were:—Delphine (scr), 4.6.12; Kitty (Smin), 4.6.36: Tio (Smin), 4.7.55; Oi (2min), 4.12.30; Me Too (Smin). 4.14.25. Results: —Tio, 1; Kitty, 2; Delphine, 3. OUTBOARDS Four speedsters contested the first outboard races of four miles. The Chief led a good start with Lady Gay, Blue Streak and Silvertown Kid, in that order. At the end of the first round Blue Streak led by 200yds ahead of Silvertown Kid, Lady Gay and The Chief. On tlie way back to the Sr. Heliers mark, Silvertown Kid capsized. Tlie driver, Mr. F. Pidgeon, was picked up by a launch, and the boat righted. The other three finished as follows: Blue Streak (lmin) 3.45.27: Lady Gay (lmin 40see), 3.47.5; The Chief (4raip 30sec), 3.49.40. Result: Blue Streak, 1; The Chief, 2; Lady Gay’, 3.
The second outboard race was based on performances in the previous event. The field started in this order: Lady Gay, Blue Streak and Miss Tamaki. At the end of the first round, Blue Streak led Lady Gay by 300yds. Mis?? Tamaki gave up at the end of the round owing to engine trouble. Finishing times were Blue Streak (scr), 4.34.10; and Lady Gay (lmin 40sec), 4.34.50. Results:—Lnd\ Gay, 1.
MANUKAU YACHT CLUB WOMEN’S LAUNCH RACE The chief event of the Manuka u YachJt and Motor Boat Club’s programme on Saturday* was a race for launches steered by women. The event was won by the cruiser Norma, with Rainbow second. Races were also held for the various classes of sailing craft. Details are as follow: Finishing times:— Yachts. —Sea Toiler, 4.27.50; Drone, 4.28.36; Daphne, 4.30.42: Mist Maid. 4.33.13; Nyria. 4.37.14; Janet, 4.47.42. Result: Sea Toiler, 1; Drone, 2; Dahpnc, 3. Launches.—Norma, 3.57.35; Rainbow. 4.1.47. Ngaroma had a mishap in the first round and retired. Result: Norma. 1; Rainbow, 2. Takapuna 12ft 6in Glass.—Nor Wilson. 3.57; Tuatea, 3.57.3; Comet, 4.1. Result: Nor Wilson, 1; Tuatea, 2; Comet, 3. The officers for the day were :—Messrs. V. Vaughan, A. Grupen, W. Rawlinson, A. Jeffs and I. Dennes.
MANUKAU CRUISING CLUB
YACHT AND LAUNCH EVENTS Eight yachts and fouir launches competed in the Manukau Cruising Club’s events on Saturday. The weather conditions were ideal, a sou’west breeze coming away all afternoon and giving the boats a beat out to the Waikowhai mark and a flat run home. Details are as follow: Finishing times for yachts: Aoma (scr.), 4.7.58; Sylvia (15m), 4.11.16: Sea Horse (sm), 4.16.25; Champagne (3m), 4.19.22; Sea Gnome (11m). 4.20.48; Una (33m), 4.34.48: Shirley (41m), 4.57.33. On corrected times the result was: Una, 1; Aoma, 2; Sylvia, 3; Sea Gnome, 4. A protest has been lodged against Aoma for failing to give way at a mark. The result of this may alter the placings. The Fearon Challenge Cup was also raced for and resulted in a win for Sea Gnome. Launches’ finishing times were: Tawera (25m), 3.44.59. 1; Surprise (scr.), 3.45.8. 2; Elma (16m), 3.46.12, 3; Cremorno (29m), 3.48.1, 4. A model yacht race was also held in the basin. Seven owners sent their models away’, but five of them failed to get the correct set, and went to leeward of the course. The only boats to finish were models owned by Masters Pascoe and W. Billings. The officials were: Starter and judge. Mr. P. Auger; assistant-starter, Mr. G. McPike; timekeepers, Messrs. T. E. Smith and J. C. Sibbin. TAURANGA YACHTING Special to THE BUX TAURANGA, Today. A race for the seven-footers was held on Saturday by the Tauranga Yacht and Power-boat Club. The winner was L. Tong’s 1.X.L., and Andrew’s Pal second. Petrel, which finished first, was disqualified for hitting a mark. WAKATERE CANOE CLUB The Wakatere Canoe Club held another race for W class canoes during the week-end. Although the weather was wet and rainy, and a hard northerly* made a lumpy sea, four boats faced the starter and a fast, close race resulted. The boats proved in this race that they were thoroughly seaworthy under conditions that would embarrass many* a larger boat. Results were: —Waimarie, lmin. I : Wahine, scr. 2; Winnit. lmin, 3: "White Wings, lmin, 4. All the boats finished very* cfoselv, only 30 seconds separating , the first and second boats.
