BLESSING

(Second Prize Poem) Dear, dear lad, with the eyes of brown. With your shoulders squared and your gaze afar, Marching along the road of life To the distant goal of your guiding star. What will you find awaiting there — The shining star of your dreams, in truth ? Dear, dear lad, with the eyes of brown. Dreaming the sacred dreams of youth! Dear, dear lad, there is gold far you, Down where the shining rainbow ends; But the path is bejewelled with tears, not dew, And often the way is fraught with bends. I can only turn to the gilded throne, Where the figure of white Hope, smiling, gleams, And, kneeling, pray that you find at last The realisation of all your dreams. Jean Mclndoe, aged 15.
