EAST COAST STOCK
BIG MOBS FOR NORTH INCREASING NUMBERS OF CATTLE It is expected that several large mobs of sheep will pass through Opotoki shortly on the way to the Waikato and other northern districts from Poverty Bay. Most of the buying has been confined to breeding ewes, but a certain number of wethers also changed hands. As was the case last year, sheep destined for Waikato will be driven to Taneatua by road, then railed northward. It is not anticipated that there will be the same delay this year as last, as the railway officials now have a good idea of the business likely to offer during the season.
With the opening up of the East. Coast Road toward Cape Runaway increasing numbers of sheep will be travelling through Opotiki northward, as Hick’s Bay Freezing Works, where most of these sheep formerly went, are closed down and dismantled. From present indications, a fairly large number of cattle will be sent northward this year. Already two large mobs from the East Coast passed through Opotiki. The opening of the Motu Bridge is enabling settlers to get stock out with greater ease.
