First the Talkies, Now “Smellies” Appear
WJIHEN “the talkies” first came ’’ into being it was derisively suggested that “the smellies” would arrive next.
The joke has been taken seriously, and here they are. In one cinema the smell of oranges is wafted into the auditorium during the screening of orange blossom scenes. An American picture house, however, has become even more realistic, the manager frying a panful of bacon and eggs “off stage to synchronise with the screen action.
