CINEMA MUSIC

SUITING THE MOOD OF THE MOMENT ORCHESTRA LEADER’S VIEWS An orchestra leader in a motion picture theatre does not always play precisely on the theme that is uppermost in the public mind. That disclosure is made by Mr. Theodore Henkel, late of the Capitol Theatre, Sydney, who will lead the orchestra at the Civic Theatre, Auckland, Discussing the harmonious presentation of pictures and music he said recently that the first task of the orchestra leader was to look for dramatic highlights and prepare for them in advance rather than to slavishly follow the theme of the moment. The leader was required to watch the screen closely throughout the screening of any picture carrying an orchestra accompaniment outside itself. There was always the possibility* that the operators would slow down or speed up according to the time at their disposal so no prearranged musical programme could be regarded as final.
