Thrills For Epsom

TROTTING CARNIVAL First Day’s Card Reviewed FLAGS will be flying at Alexandra Park on Friday next to usher in the Auckland Trotting Club s annual sumruer carnival, which will be continued on Saturday, reaching finality on Tuesday, December 31.

The liberal prizes offered by the club for the numerous events which colour the three-day card have attracted to Epsom trotters and pacers of the highest grade in their respective sections. This will ensure tophole racing in every item, and patrons can with confidence look forward to much excitement and many thrills during the progress of the carnival. To add to the interest of the opening day, the popular three-year-old classic, the Great Northern Derby, will be staged, which with the Auckland Cup and Rowe Trotting Cup, provides a feast for fans that is unusual fcr any one day. Excellent acceptances have been received for Friday’s monster programme, and a preliminary review of j the fields by “Abaydos” is appended. 1 rltroductory Trot While the field in this class of square-gaited event is not as large as is often the case at Epsom the calibre of the improving trotters is higher than usual. Roma Bingen, Wild and Marble Star are on the front of the handicap, and the latter will appeal most. Tamahine will have a host of admirers, and providing she can stay on "will be hard to beat. Kolmar is nicely placed, and if the track is to his liking he will be a pest to the others. Akenehi, if right, has a royal chance, and Writer, a recent winner, must be taken seriously. Anselme should also be dangerous, but a likely quartet will be Akenehi, Tamahine, Marble Star and Kolmar. December Handicap Twelve improving pacers will measure strides in this event, with eight of the runners on the limit. Enawah will be a tough proposition, and if she hops away smartly will keep her rivals busy. Queen Elizabeth should be in good condition, and must be considered. Benefice is working with plenty of dash, and provided she handles the grass to the best advantage will be heard from. Nella Dillon may prefer the shorter race later, while Trustworthy and Warspite are possibilities in this field. Sir Author is a good one that will keep those in front stepping briskly. A favoured quintet may be Queen Elizabeth, Benefice, Trustworthy and Warspite. Auckland Cup This promises to be a fine, spectacular contest, and is full of possibilities. Dilworth has a big following, and off the front must be given a rare chance in view of recent performances. Free Advice is on the up grade again, and is sure to be in the picture. If he goes away The Abbey must be dangerous, and Linkman, if back to his best, and Machine Gun are others off the end with good prospects. Imprint will be bracketed with Dilworth, and will be a strong support for Berkett. Gold Jacket is coming back to his previous good form, while Kohara is always a dangerous customer at Epsom. Prince Pointer will be much improved since the New Zealand Cup race, while Padlock and Peter Bingen, both crack-a-jacks, will make things decidedly interesting. Dilworth, Free Advice, Gold Jacket and Prince Pointer are in demand with early backers. Great Northern Derby Mere comes the three-year-olds, and what a fine collection for the classic race. Certainly the best-known in the history of the contest, and it should provide a real thriller when the final lane is entered upon. Great Parrish Purser, Royal Silk, First Flight, Ngingo Ngingo, Grand Canyon and Lydia have all won races, and this lot ™ alone should provide a keen race. Then there is Pro Rata and Kewpie’s Guy, each of whom can invest the classic with further interest. On the day speculators will have a solid problem to solve, but it is generally anticipated that the four placed horses at Addington last month. Purser, Roya! Silk, Ngingo Ngingo and Great Parrish, B will fight out a stirring battle. v _ Grandstand Handicap

In this event are several two milers who promise, sooner or later, to reach a much higher plane, with pretensions even to Cup class. Mountain Dell, Evelyn Locanda, Reremai and Wilma Dillon are in this and some of them at any rate will no doubt be flying higher before the season concludes. Cornelian and Concertina are a likely pair off the limit to make things merry, and Explosion cannot be overlooked. He is a real stayer and while he prefers a larger track will keep his opponents busy. Hal Chimes should be in good trim for the Christmas fixture, and Stanmoor may prove a surprise packet over the longer journey. His recent form up to 10 furlongs has been good. The back markers. Mountain Deli, Wilma Dillon an,. Evelyn Locanda, may find Explosion the most troublesome. Rowe Trotting Cup A fine field of square-gaited performers will be seen in action for this rich prize, and the race should witness a high-class exhibition of trotting. The front pair, Raima and Peter McKinney, have improved this season to such an extent that they will be dangerous. Rose Bingen is useful and. should account for Kgatira. Last year’s winner, Kempton, is showing a return to form and is sure to run a fine race, while Sister Beatrice, under favourable circumstances, would have a good show. Then on the same mark is Waikaha, who, if the footing is soft, will go close to winning his third Rowe Cup. The Tomkinson trio, Western Voyage, Young Blake and Elzear, will make a warm combination, while Peterwah, if 0.K., will make the race interesting. The indication is that Raima, Waikaha, Kempton and Tomkinson’s elect will be most in demand. St. Heliers Handicap A good field of 19 is listed for this 1 item, which gives speedsters a chance to display their prowess over 10 furlongs. Of the front trio, Oakhampton appeals, and if back to form would prove very hard to head off. The

RICCARTON NOTES

WINTON TROTS

Southern pair, Acre and Genuine, are more than useful and should make a keen combination, while Goldman may provide a surprise. Rockaway, \ endome and Wilma Dillon are together and any one of these may be found doing well at the box. Carmel is a bold pacer and in capital fettle and his prospects must be considered rosy. Torpedo Huon is a possibility and Wrackler is a dangerous one over any distance. Bessie Logan has a fine turn of speed and Kelson Tasker is a form horse In a great pool, Vendome, Rockburn, Carmel and Wrackler will have a host of friends. Akarana Handicap Twenty colour the card for the final heat of the day, including Kgingo Ngingo, who will be seen out in the Derby, and Great Ballin, Trustworthy, Warspite, Nella Dillon and Sir Author, all booked to take part in the December Handicap. Their form m that heatwill be a guide for this event. But there are some speedy customers engaged for the first time during the day. Richore and Hostess will make a sound bracket, and the former if only reliable would give his rivals a headache chasing him. Vanity Boy has improved a whole heap and must be respected, while Belle Axwortliy is a consistent performer which will be hard to beat. Great Peter, brilliant at a short ]ourTiev will give a lot of cheek and will have a good following. Hal Chimes, If reserved -for this contest, will also be in the picture, but the f j^ V( ? ul T tes may come from Great Peter, Belle Axworthy, Nella Dillon and Vanity Boy.

GLARE AND QUANTUM FOR WINGATUI Special to THE SUN CHRISTCHURCH,- Friday. Messrs. Wright, Stephenson and Co., Ltd., have sold for export to Western Australia a yearling by Paladin from On Sight. The latter is a mare by Winkle from Aye Ready. Aye Ready is a sister to Ayah, dam of Inferno and Jemidar. The latter horse, a son of Martian, won the Perth Cup of £2,000, the distance being two miles, so that his family has already a highclass representative in the west. The yearling, which was bred by Mr. Gordon E. Murray, of Little* River, will be gelded and turned out for a further six months before *being shipped to Australia. J. W. Lowe, the Trentham trainer, arrived from Wellington this morning with Glare and Quantum, who will be racing at the Southern holiday meetings. It is understood that they will be ridden by the Riccarton horseman, C. Emerson, when the weights suit. Discordia, a member of F. Christmas’s team, broke a hind leg when getting through easy work at Riccarton yesterday morning. She pulled up suddenly, and it was soon apparent that something was seriously amiss. It is a most striking coincidence that in the last six weeks three horses have met with accidents in almost the same part of the track, but in the case of both Glengariff and Discordia the break was traced to faulty bone formation.
