TE AROHA NOTES
The proposal to erect a municipal hall and council offices is now being taken up in a spirit that spells success. Rians have been drawn up by an Auckland firm, and approved by the Borough Council, the estimated cost for the building and equipment being £15,500. A meeting of the council is to be held on January 8 to consider the proposal to apply to the Loans Board for sanction to borrow the requisite amount. The building is to be erected on the council’s section in Rewi Street.
Some of the leading residents have taken up a proposal to establish a public hospital in Te Aroha. The town is becoming an important centre, and the nearest hospital at present is that at Hamilton 32 miles away.
A committee of the Borough Council has notified the proprietor of the local theatre that the film, “Evangeline,” is not a suitable one for screening on Christmas night. * * * Miss Vernon, M.A., of Los Angeles, who has been a relieving teacher at the Te Aroha High School, leaves New Zealand next February for Hawaii, where she has been appointed to a position in the Honolulu High School. In addition to teaching, Miss Vernon has undertaken research work on the economic development of New Zealand. Miss Vernon's grandfather was one of the early settlers of this country and for a number of years her uncle, Mr. J. E. Yernon, was headmaster of the Palmerston North High School.
