In the Market Place
BANANAS SCARCE GOOD CHRISTMAS TRADE Bananas are scarce in the City Marts and the lines offered are being cleared steadily at high prices. Trading for Christmas has now begun and all markets are experiencing brisk trading. In the fruit market at the moment apples, which continue to be in short supply, oranges and bananas are being sold at high rates. There have been additional lots of oranges, with more Californian expected on Monday, but apples are still extremely scarce. Sturmers are almost finished. Soft fruits, such as strawberries, cherries, plums and gooseberries, are cheap for the season. A noticeable feature among the New Zealand apricots coming forward is the presence of ripe rot in many lines. Australian apricots are not so affected. Fairly large quantities of plums are selling, but tomatoes are commanding only a fair inquiry generally. Firm lines are best sought. Strawberries are being cleared well at moderate rates. The principal lines of vegetables are well supplied, with no important change in rates. The keen inquiry for choice and medium cockerels is still the outstanding position of the poultry market. Heavy hens sell well and turkeys, geese and ducks are all well stocked.
