CONCRETE TO HOWICK
RESULT OF LOAN POLLS EASIER ACCESS TO BEACHES Yesterday ratepayers in the Pakuranga riding of the Manukau County decided by an overwhelming majority to raise £9,300 to cover the county’s share of the cost of regrading, draining and paving in concrete the Pan-mure-Jlowick main road, from the Panmure bridge to the Howiek Town District’s boundary. The concrete will bo., continued through the Kiowickdistrict to the eastern boundary, in accordance with the ratepayers’ decision at a poll taken in Howiek on Wednesday, thus giving a run of about 16 .miles from the G.P.O. along the eastern coast. Work will begin within two or three months, and it is expected that the 18ft. concrete strip will be completed about the end of October next. The road will serve a large farming comrhunity, and also give better access to suburban homes and to week-end and suimmer baches in the bays of the eastern harbour and the Haurakii Gulf. The new road will benefit Bucklands and Eastern Beaches, Mellon’s Bay, Howiek, and Cockle Bay directly, and will also increase the popularity of the more distant beaches of Maraetai and Beachlands. The run to ‘Howiek will then take about 20 minutes. Details of the voting at yesterday’s poll are:—For the proposal, 259; against, 12. Majority for, 277.
