GAY SCENE AT EPSOM
A delightful garden party was given yesterday afternoon by Mrs. H. O. Nolan at her home, Ardmore.* Epsom. A large number of guests were present to enjoy the beauty of the grounds, which were looking particularly fresh and lovely after the showers. The sheltered garden, with its beds and borders, gay in all their wealth of summer blossom and perfume, with banks or colourful rambler roses against the green of shrubs and trees, gorgeous pohutukawa above the smooth terraced lawns and flowerdecked pergolas, made one forget that the noise and tempestuous
weather conditions prevailing in the City were only a short distance away.

Lady Gunson's smart frock of chiffon was patterned with large shaded roses, and she wore a black hat. Lady Mitehelson had chosen a blsick. ensemble of georgette, with a liat to match.
Lady Robertson was wearing a smart frock in red, with a black hat.
Lady Elliot’s floral crepe de chine frock had tonings of blue, and with it was worn a blue hat trimmed with fiat velvet flowers.
Lady Stringer was in black satin marocain and lace in a pale string shade, with a black hat with ospi'ej-s. Lady Tuck (London), had on a frock and coat of black chiffon, with a collar of skunk, and a black bangkok hat.
Mrs. Oakes wore an ensemble in brown and fawn tones with a cigar-brown bangkok hat. Mrs. G. Bloomfield’s frock was of soft black satin, with a black hat. Mrs. Greig had chosen a black ensemble and a black hat. Mrs. Chalmers wore a smart frock of blue and white with a floral pattern, and blue bangkok hat. . A frock of black crepe de chine with a floral pattern in autumn tonings, and black liat, was -worn by Mrs. Edward Russell.
Mrs. Lumley Frank (London), was in navy blue with oriental embroidery and a navy hat. Mrs. Whitney was in a floral georgette frock, with a black hat. Mrs. S. Thorne George had on an ensemble of black chiffon and a black hat. Miss Nolan’s frock was navy blue, worn with a hat of the same shade.
Mrs. Alfred Nathan chose clack chiffon with red embroidery, and a black hat.
Mrs. Pritt was in a black ensemble, with a black hat.
Mrs. J. Reid wore a black silk coat over a georgette frock, and a black hat.
Mrs. R. E. Isaacs had on a black en semble and a liat of pale green straw.
Mrs. Trevor Holmden was in black and white georgette, with a black hat.
A frock of pale beige lace and a black hat was chosen by Mrs. de Co'urcy.

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE OPOTIKI BRANCH At a special meeting of the Opotiki Women’s Institute, held in the Farmers* tea room, Mrs. Main presided. Members stood in silence for a few moments as a mark of sympathy to Mrs. Absolom, president of the Opotiki Institute, whose husband died recently. Five members were admitted. More than 80 women were present, some of the members bringing friends. After business had been concluded, Mr. Draper gave a most interesting and instructive address on the League of Nations. Mrs. Burke then sang a song, and this was followed by a debate, “Should Bachelors be Taxed?” Mrs. Neilson and Mrs. Cooper took the affirmative, ancl Mrs. Skuse and Mrs. Wilson the negative. On a show of hands, it was decided that bachelors should not be taxed. The demonstrations were in the hands of M.rs. Stephenson and Miss Short, and were watched with much interest. Mrs. McAlister was in charge of a stall, and did very good business, with the result that many prizes will be purchased to be competed for at the picnic on January 11. The hostesses for the evening were Mesdames Main, Davies, Forbes, Crawford, "Watkins, and Skuse. CHRISTMAS PARTY GUESTS SPEND A MERRY EVENING Dancing, mirth, melody, games, and competitions—such was the theme of a delightful private party held on Thursday evening at -St. Michael’s Hall, Belmont. The decorations were on a lavish scale, balloons, streamers, and the usual dance-room favours being greatly in evidence. The hostesses were Mesdames F. Southen, V. Reid, and S. Boston. Mr. Alec Ker supplied excellent dance music for th« enjoyment of the guests, while M.r. C. Collingson entertained with, violin solos and humorous songs. Mrs. Southen chose a frock of vieux rose georgette, with diamente reliefs. Mrs. Reid’s frock was of black lace over satin, while apple green lace over net tissue was worn by Mrs. Boston. Others present were;—Mrs. Collins, in gold lace over satin; Mrs. Alec Ker, lemon geprgette, with reliefs of brilliants; Mrs. Scales, nut brown crepe de chine and lace; Mrs. Collingson, black crepe de chine, with contrasting scarf; Mrs. Salome, black crepe de chine, with silver and crystal embroidery; Mrs. Beggs, alice blue crepe de chine. Mrs. Lewis, who was in duchess blue and orange ninon; Mrs. Harrison, gold lace over vieux rose satin; Mrs. Hodgkinson, cameo pink crepe de chine and ivory lace; Mrs. Feek. apple green georgette, with reliefs of diamente; Mrs. Ward, petalled frock of floral georgette; Miss Wood, delphinium blue georgette and lace; Miss Steele, nile green crepe de chine; Miss Carter, lettuce green satin beaute; Miss M. Brown, coral pink crepe de chine; Miss S. Scales, ivory ninon, with geranium embroidery; Miss Allen, coral pink georgette; Miss Hooper, duchess blue georgette; Miss Strange, black georgette and brilliants.
