Conjecture
(Second Prise)
What hourne would be ours, bad your line snapped asunder, O Maui, the Fisher-boy? How would it be If your fish-hook had failed, and the island of wonder Had never been lured from the floor of the sea?
Should we. who lo.k or. Mother Earth Be children of another birth. With dower of spindrift and sea-cries. Or shifting acreage of skies? Should we go some unhousled way. Continuing not in any stay. As trackless as the seaward snow? Say, Maui, were it better so? 0, Maui, your catch set your green eyes a-glitter. You hauled on your line, and your laugh was the thunder. A jest may be sweet and a jest may be bitter. Say, how has it been with this island of wonder? The wingless forest, burning, reels. While gyring cranks and turning wheels Dispel the symphony you heard, O. Maui, when the moki bird First shouted from the first wet tree That morning, when, from out the sea You pulled the island. Maui, say, 0 did you well on that blue day ? C. R. ALLEN. Dunedin.
