"IT IS ONLY BLUFF"
CYCLIST’S VIEW OF N.Z. A.A.A’S WARNING
INTERNATIONAL AFFILIATION “The council of the New Zealand Amateur Ath.etic Association is only trying to 'put the bluff across,’ ” said Mr. Less Wilson, secretary of the Manukau Amateur Cycling Club, today when interviewed by a SUN representative and asked to comment on the warning issued by a special meeting 'of the council of the N.Z.A.A.A. in Wellington yesterday. The. warning was issued for the benefit of riders competing at a meeting arranged by the club for December 30, to be conducted under the auspices of the New Zealand Union of Cyclists, and pointed out that they would, by competing, deprive themselves of the right to take part in any New Zealand Amateur A+hie tic Association’s club or championship contest “The New Zealand Union of Cyclists has applied to the International Cyclists’ Union, with headquarters in Paris, for affiliation to that body,” Mr. Wilson continued, “and has been provisionally accepted. The international body has asked the Nationai. Cyclists’ Union of England to report on the New Zealand Cyclists' Union, and that report will be presented in February next. “Although the word ‘amateur’ cioes not appear in the title, it may yet be inserted,” Wilson further stated. “When the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association heard of the application of the New Zealand Cyclists* Union for affiliation to the international body, it also applied, and was unsuccessful, where we were successful. “As for the disqualification talked of, that has nothing to do with us. We are affiliated to a higher body than the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association, as must be evident from the fact that the N.Z.A.A.A. applied to the International Cyclists’ Union for affiliation. “The move which resulted in the formation of the New Zealand Cyclists’ Union is no attempt on the part of Auckland to control cycling throughout the Dominion, although we know that several clubs in other centres are with us,” Mr. Wilson concluded. POSITION IN CANTERBURY Press Association CHRISTCHURCH, Thursday. The recommendations of the cyclists affiliated to the Canterbury Centre of ‘the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association with regard to the control of cycling were presented at last night’s meeting of the centre, and without discussion, were passed to be included in the rules at the next quarterly meeting.
