AWARDS TO CHILDREN

BUCHANAN PRIZES PRESENTATION AT TE PAPAPA ‘T am thankful to say that examinations to test mere cleverness or smartness are going by the board,” said Mr. H. T. Gibson, headmaster of the Te Papapa School, at the presentation of tlio Buchanan award this morning. The awards for all examinations, he contended, should be not so much for the acquisition of mere knowledge as for the wider cause of real education. The Buchanan prizes filled this requirement in that they were the reward of sheer grit and merit, and the power to beat down the handicaps of life. Mr. W. J. Jordan, M.P., said later that it did not matter if a man spelt “cat” with a “k,” if lie was a good citizen. The prizewinners for 1929 were Donald Jack and Rosalie Hewitt, who each received a cheque for £ 6 from Mr. and Mrs. Robert Buchanan, of Quadrant Road, being the interest on a sum invested with the Public Trustee. Prizes for an essay on “Thrift,” donated by the directors of the Auckland Savings Bank, were presented by the Rev. D. D. Scott, to Felix Westbrook, Joan Massey, Ruth Robertson, Elma Wright, and Henry Lawson. The Mayor, Mr. E. Morton, presented Iris Musgrave with the Young Helpers’ badge, donated by the representatives of the Dr. Barnardo's Homes. Visitors and parents were entertained at morning tea by the school committee.
