THRILLING VOYAGE

RUDDERLESS STEAMER IN GREAT GALES TOWED HOME BY TUGS United P.A. — By Telegraph—Copyright Reed. 0.5 a.m. LONDON, Wednesday. After a thrilling battle with gales, three Dutch tugs brought the disabled liner Jamaica Settler to Falmouth. A terrific sea like a tidal wave smashed the steamer’s *rudder in midAtlantic. She drifted at the mercy of the storm for a week, after which a tug picked up an S.O.S. and took the liner in tow, but the hawsers parted and the tug was driven off 150 miles. A second tug arrived, but after a fortnight’s voyage the hawsers were snapped by successive hurricanes. A third tug was dispatched and towed the Jamaica Settler 1,000 miles. The Jamaica Settler is a British steamer of 7,256 tons, owned by the Jamaica Direct Fruit Line, Limited.
