LIBRARY FOR DEVONPORT

COUNCIL ADMINISTRATION A decision to lease two shops in Clarence Street for library purposes was confirmed by the Devonport Borough Council last evening. The council, however, limited its liability for rent from the end of February until the end of the financial year. It also undertook to give favourable consideration to a request for help next financial year. The Citizen’s Library Committee, which waited on the council, was represented by Messrs. W. E. Napier, chairman, F. de J. Robin, lion, secretary, and Mr. Moss, who thanked the council for its sympathetic support. The former Minister of Defence, Hon. T. M. Wilford, telegraphed that he had not been able to secure Cabinet's consent to the proposal to vote £SOO toward the cost of reconditioning Queen’s Parade, as a set-oft' for non-payment of rates on Government property. He had left the matter to his successor. The telegram was not dispatched until after Mr. Wilford had left New Zealand. Pictures will be screened in the Victoria Theatre on Christmas night. The proprietors have decided to consider donating £5 toward the school dental clinic funds. Takapuna Grammar School will be able to have a wicket for its cricket teams on the football domain at Devonport this summer. Notification of the holding of a series of public inquiries to determine the best boundaries for districts to be grouped under the regional planning clauses of the Town Planning Act. was given by the Minister of Internal Affairs. Devonport has not yet undertaken the compilation of the civic survey, required by the Town Planning Act, and will wait for further information of the regional planning scheme.

“A most instructive and informative report,” was the comment of the Mayor when the engineer to the joint standing committee controlling the North Shore rubbish destructor reported on the steps being taken to remedy the smoke nuisance, lie claimed that the installation of an oil burner in the flue of the apparatus was burning the smoke and minimising the trouble, so that now it was practically non-exist-ent. After carefully examining the working of the Auckland City rubbish destructor, he was of opinion that the residents about the neighbourhood of the North Shore rubbish destructor did not have 5 per cent, of the inconvenience borne by residents in the vicinity of the City destructor. The council offices will be closed from December 24 to January 11 to permit employees to have their annual leave. Arrangements for opening the office for one hour daily from January 6 will be made. The oytside staff will receive pay for one day more than allowed in the awards governing their work. The Mayor said that last year Devonport had been reproved by the Local Bodies Association for doing this, as it might be used as a precedent for the actions of other local bodies.

The dog tax was fixed at 10s per annum and the 10 per cent, penalty on unpaid rates will operate from January 31. After the council meeting councillors were the guests of the Mayor. Mr. J. Hislop, deputy-Mayor, replied on behalf of councillors.
