Relative to the feature article on, tho Auckland Club that appeared in last Friday’s Sun, John A. Fanch, the well-known Ponsonby bowler, makes tho following observations which tell their own interesting story: “I notice in tho background of the illustration tho little round houso where I first saw the light of day. I well remember my dad sayi ig that on this occasion, tho members got him merry, as they claimed I was tho first baby born in Xe\v Zealand on the premises of a bowling club. Tickets for the function will b« circularised through the presidents of the respective clubs shortly. It is intended that tho reception will be a real bowlers’ evening of welcome to the visitors. Th© Canadian bowlers will arrive on December 29, and the Centre executive invites all bowlers who have the time at their disposal to extend a warm welcome at the steamer. On December 30 they will leave by the 8.40 u.m. train for Whangarei, returning to the city again by the 6.12 p.m. train on January 1. On the morning of tho following day they will play at West .End, and in the afternoon at Carlton. The morning of January 3 will find them at Epsom and the afternoon Playing at Remuera. During the morning of January 4 they will be given a motor trip round the city, and during the afternoon of that day they will be received at a mayoral reception on the Auckland club’s green, where a test match of four rinks a side will be staged against a selection of Auckland Centre bowlers. On January G local members of the recent party of the New Zealand bowlers who toured through Canada last year will entertain the Canadian bowlers, and on January 6 the visitors will leave Auckland for Hamilton on the 9 a.m. train.
Mr. E. A. Craig, president of the Auckland club, and Mrs. Craig are to be warmly commended for the splendid At Home given to the members and friends of his club on Saturday last. Without doubt the function was a brilliant success and will stand out as one of the most prominent that has been conducted in the long life of the venerable club. His speech of welcome embodied some most interesting recountings of facts relating to the history of the club and the introduction of the game into 'the Dominion. Mr. and Mrs. Craig set a very high standard in the staging of the function in every respect.
The sixteenth annual contest for the champion banner of Auckland will commence on December 26. The greens to be utilised for this notable test of bowling strength *of the Auckland Bowling Centre are all that can bo desired. They include, Remuera, Hillsboro, St. Heliers, Auckland, Dominion Road and Epsom, the post-sectional and final games being played at Carlton. All that is necessary to place the surfaces in fine condition is a spell of fine weather just prior to commencement of the tournament.
The entrants include 58 teams—two less than last season—who are divided into six sections. In the A section are included some excellent teams. The winning combination for this group of players should be found among the following: -, Cowell, Vella, E B. Wright (Onehunga) ; Shea th, , Amtman, T. Procter (Remuera); C. A. Allan, W. J. Campbell, J. H. Baxter, J. Davidson (Auckland): Melville, Stapleton, Morgan, Elvey (Devonport), or, Frost, Cross, Ritchie, S. Lamb (Carlton). S. Lamb skipped a team that won the banner in 1927, and the inclusion of Ritchie might give him a good chance for section honours. The Auckland team, headed by Davidson, embraces J. H. Baxter, a Helensville bowler who has shown good form at the parent club this season, and the inclusion of W. J. Campbell makes the combination a very evenly-balanced and strong quartet. T. Proctor’s team includes a player in C. Amtman, new to Auckland, who comes with a very fine reputation from Dunedin, thus adding considerably to the strength of the Remuera combination. E. B. Wright heads a strong team which should obviously make its strength felt. S. Vella made a remarkably good showing in the recent open singles championship, and also at the Carlton Labour Day tournament. The Devonport quartet is strong and evenly balanced.
The B section includes four very good teams in Clarkson, Coutts, Ball, Truscott (Carlton); Horsley. Wise, C. Hardley, I. Clarke (West End); Campbell. Duncan, Mackay, Muston (Auckland). and Crawshaw, Keoford. White, H. Wright (St. Heliers). Either of these teams might come out with the section honours. Truscott’s combination has been the winner of this event on two occasions, and incidently it may be mentioned that the team has been together with the respective members in the same position for many years, winning many prominent events. Indeed tiie team is regarded as a fine model of bowling combination. C. Huston's team should do well. G. J. Mackay appears in tournament play again after a lons iUnes» but he is playing

exceptionally well. I. Clarke’s team |is prominent for its evenly-balanced qualities, while the St. Heliers team skipped by IJ. Wright is the splendid team that holds the banner at the present time. The C section comprises a group of ! players with the teams, Duncan, Con- ! stantine, Wrightson, G. Hosking (Carlton) ; Yeo, Chambers, Roy lance, J. Wakerley (Rocky Nook); H. Neil, I Macky, Scantlebury, M. Walker (Auckland); Miller, Joil, Baker, J. Findlay ; (Mount Eden). Any of these four i teams might come out the winners of | this section. The Carlton combination j is always to be reckoned with under i the able guidance of G. Hosking. The Rocky Nook combination is strong and evenly balanced; the Mount Eden team is good, and there is a chance of M. Walker displaying some of his old-time form, although the latter’s play has certainly deteriorated very much this season. • Tho D section is certainly the weakest of all tho six in the contest. It includes Brittain, G. Gladding, Josey, W. Coltman (Carlton); Young, Tongue, Loram, W. H. Jenkin (Rocky Nook); Almao, Stewart, Morrish, S. Gribble (Whangarei). The three teams mentioned are very excellent combinations, and the winner should be found among them. W. Coltman heads a very line team, W. Jenkin of Rocky Nook, has an evenly-balanced team, while the Whangarei quartet is credited with being composed of excellent exponents of the game on the green. Strangely enough follows a section which should be the most interesting in the tournament, it comprises the following: Buxton, Wicksteed, Kilgour, IT. Clarke (Carlton) ; Acheson, Spooner, Coe, Russel (Remuera); Siddler, Farley, Fince, Keatley (Rocky Nook); A. Parsons, of Ponsonby, with his team unannounced: Lamb, Bruce, Dunlop, tie Launay (Epsom): Crane, Harrison, Dr. Good, W. J. Orr (Whangarei), and a team headed by Dick, now of the Grey Lynn club. IT. Clarke’s team is of excellent calibre. Russell, the present holder, of the champion of champions title, is not so happy in the selection of his team. Iveatley has a front division that should support him well. De Launay, who is always to be reckoned with, has excellent players in his front division. All these teams should give a good account of themselves and the result of their play will be watched with great interest.
The F section has four teams in Bates, Elliott, Bird, J. F. Hosking (Carlton); Edwards, , Lamb,
L. Randall (Rocky Nook); Mincham, Liversidge, Buckley, IT. Whittle (Grey Lynn); McMaster, Tonkin, Livingstone, E. J. Glatland (Onehunga), which fight out the section honours. The Carlton combination has* steady players in Bates, Elliott and Bird of the front division. L. Randall made an excellent showing in this tournament some two years ago. The Grey Lynn quartet is another of those teams whose members have been together for some years past and have some fine victories to their credit. The Onehunga representation comprises a team that might well be given credit for excellent bowling. With such a fine array of the cream of the best exponents of the game in the Queen City the tournament will prove most interesting, and the team which comes out tho ultimate -winner will have tested their bowling ability to the fullest in the annual test which decides the club to have the honour of hanging the champion banner of Auckland for the ensuing 12 months. GREY LYNN TOURNAMENT The Grey Lynn Bowling Club conducted a pa rs tournament yesterday, there being an entry of ten teams. Rain in the morning made the greens a little heavy, but they played well. Hill and Sanderson (Remuera) and Snell and Newton (Grey Lvnn) each had 4 wins and 1 loss, and in the play-off the former won. TOURNEY AT RAWHITI An open pairs tournament was held yesterday by the Rawhiti Bowling Club, 14 teams competing. Sturgess and Hills (Edendale) were successful in section A with 5 wins and 1 loss, while section B was won by McKenzie and Parker-Hill (Papatoetoe), with 4 wins and 2 losses. Th 3 final will be played on a subseauen: date. AVONDALE SINGLES The final of the Avondale Bowling Club’? singles championship between B. Myern and Fisher resulted in a win for the former by 25 to 10. PASCOE CUP Foil swing were the results in a match playec for the Pascoe Cup between Avondale, aolders» and Henderson, the former having a narrow win. AUCKLAND CLUB’S TOURNEY
WON BY G. HOSKING’S RINK Two Carlton rinks, skipped by G. Hosking and J. llosking respectively, fought out the final of the Auckland Bowling Club’s full-rink tourney yesterday. G. llosking won by 20 points to 16. The green was heavy after ram, and ii cross-wind made it an exacting test of bowling. G. Hosking’s rink secured an early lead, and held on to it to the end, despite the losers’ determined effort to make up the leeway. At the conclusion of the match Mr. E. A. Craig, president of the Auckland Club, presented the prizes to the winning rink. The teams and their scores were: Duncan, Wrightson, Warren, G. Hosking 20, v. Bates, Elliott, Baird, J. Hosking 16. MOUNT EDEN TOURNAMENT The final of the Mount Eden Bowling Club's tournament was played yesterday and resulted as follows: — Rocky Nook (Oughton, W. H. Jenkins, Wakerly, H. Jenkins), 21, v. Pukekohe (MacPherson, Cooper, Bilkers, Hoskings), 12.
