TROTTING AT EPSOM

THIS MORNING’S WORK ARRIVAL OF VISITORS The track was holding for early., workers today at Alexandra Park, but a good breeze rendered footing better after breakfast. The Abbey, unhoppled, ran over the cup distance at a solid clip and gave a fine display. W. Clifton’s charge has never been in better shape. * * * Strong work over several circuits was allotted Evelyn Locanda, who was also free-legged. W. Nightingale’s mare infused plenty of vigour into her task. Benefice was geared up, and with K. Morrison in the sulky, worked a mile and a-half at about a 2.30 clip. * * * After breakfast J. Shaw sent Carmel and Native Prince on a 12-furlong mission. With a mile covered in 2.25 the Nelson Derby mare joined in, but breaking in front of the Prince sent him to a tangle, and Carmel eased up. This pair, however, ran over a half together in bold style, registering better than 1.5 for the distance. The Nelson Derby mare alone essayed a similar task, but fell after two furlongs had been covered. Pier rider, R. Low, escaped injury. * * * Great Change, Warspite and Warplane hopped away at the 12-furlong post, the former having 24 yards advantage. He reached the mile peg in 2.21, where the pacers went on together, Warplane finishing in front, the journey occupying 3.30. * * * A strong two miles was the portion of the Wairarapa Cup candidate, Arachne, who once on the journey showed a fine turn of speed over the final stages of the task. * * * Haerenga Pai and Margaret Wallace went together from the two-mile disc, tramping even halves for the greater part of the distance. Margaret was eased up three furlongs from home and G. Phipps’s mare went on alone, finishing up her task strongly. * * * Tradesman, with G. Phipps behind him, trotted faultlessly over two miles, putting in sound work over the last eight furlongs run in 2.25. Unhoppled Torpedo Huon and Gold Jacket went two miles at strong working pace. The pair were were together at the mile and ahalf in 3.50 and increased their speed to 1.10 for the last half. Gold Jacket did his work attractively and L. McMahon is fast getlast year’s Cup winner back to his best form. * * * Mountain Dell, free-legged traversed two miles with plenty of freedom, but was not asked for a time effort. Yesterday afternoon she gave a sound display over three circuits with the gear on. * * * Nellie Dillon, who is bearing a nice healthy appearance, was given strong pacing work by F. j. Smith. A brush over the last half showed Nella up in a good light. * * * Lady Yvonne, who is booked for Carterton, accomplished a 12-furlong task pleasingly, without putting up any time. Geo. Stubbs has the mare in fine condition. * * * Yesterday afternoon First Flight and First Carbine were associated in a mile bout run at a 2.20 clip. The Derby filly showed improvement on Tuesday’s essay. First Carbine, who is still on the robust side, is standing up to his work well. * * * The late worker this morning was Free Advice, whose mission was a mile. A. Julian did not hustle the Cup candidate over the early stages, but she ran home the final four furlongs at a fast clip. Blue Mountain King’s little daughter is in good form for her approaching engagements. * * * Arrivals from Canterbury today included the Derby candidates Purser and Royal Silk, under the charge of L. O. Thomas and S. J. Thomas respectively. The former was also accompanied by, Genuine, Acre and Lady Fan. From Palmerston North, W. Hughes made the trip with Padlock and Tamahine. W. J. Tomkinson’s powerful team is expected on Saturday morning.
