A GOOD TRIAL
CORINAX AT ELLERSLIE VALLAR’S NICE SPRINT Outstanding among the numerous efforts at Ellerslie ".his morning was an excellent gallop on the part of Corinax, while Honour, who was associated with him, also worked impressively. Tetrarchate, Vallar and Praise were also among the number to please in their essays. The tracks were thrown open at 5 a.m. and it was on the course proper (40ft out) that nearly all the gallops took place. The various tracks were in splendid order, albeit a trifle soft as the result of rain overnight. Shortly after the commencement of operations rain again fell, but it was of short duration and there was no interruption in training operations. Gold Money, who has not been up long, opened proceedings by covering five furlongs in 1.7, and appeared to be striding out in great style at the end. She may not be forward enough for the coming meeting, however. Hager Rose covered five furlongs in 1.6 3-5, and Brampton and Neil, who were on terms, were several lengths ahead of Lusoma at the end of half a mile in 53, the initial furlong in 12 3-5. Brampton is working very well at present and Neil is also showing signs of improvement. Lusoma was not persevered with after two furlongs had been passed over, and obviously is still suffering from the effects of a recent cold. A Smart Round The first really good gallop was presented by the visitors Jaleux (rails), Honour and Corinax (outside), the trio covering a circuit. Jaleux was allowed to bowl along slightly in advance of the other pair and he set a merry pace, passing over the full journey in splendid time —2.5 2-5, and carving out the last seven furlongs in 1.33 4-5, the last six in 1.21 3-5, and got over the last half-mile in 53 3-5. With four furlongs to go Honour and Corinax were in Jaleux’s quarters, and as they swnug round wide at he turn (Corinax in particular being well out) last year’s Auckland Cup winner held the upper hand. He was not hunted along, however, and easing up gave way to Honour, who just beat Jaleux, with Corinax three parts of a length back. Honour did his work impressively and was not thoroughly extended, while Corinax’s effort furnishes additional evidence that the Ellerslie representative is going to be in first-rate order for the big two miles. Kawainga and War Officer were partnered for six furlongs, returning 1.27 2-5 and 1.8 2-5 for the last five. The latter was under punishment at the turn, and Kaiwainga could have registered better time had it been required. This hack ran quite a good race in his effort at Te Awamutu, and she should continue to improve. After striding comfortably over seven furlongs in 1.36 2-5, Importer continued on and completed a further round at three-quarter pace. . For the last five of six furlongs Respirator registered 1.7 4-5, and over five Royal Lover strode at no better than a strong three-quarter pace. An Early Winner Praise and Greenaway -were paired over five furlongs, the former drawing out in the straight to beat her stablemate by nearly a length. They slipped over the initial furlong in 12 2-5, and were at the end of the second in 25, the watch reading 1.6 for the journey—useful sprint. Both horses are in great order, and whereas Praise looks an early winner, Greenaway appeals as an equally good proposition in minor events at least at the meeting. Tetrarchate is an improving hack, and this morning he carried out half a mile in 50 3-5, figures which were not equalled for the distance during training this morning. Usually a sluggish track worker, Thursby revelled in his essay over live furlongs, and easily accounted for Avon Court in 1.5 3-5. He is in nice order and with conditions to suit him is capable of a surprise during the carnival. After racing over the first furlong in 12 1-5, Gemlight came right away from Alloy and wound up half a mile in 52. Hampton Park sprinted three furlongs in 39 2-5> and as the time indicates he could have done better. Good Boy left six furlongs behind in 1.22 and did it comfortably, which for a similar distance Some Lady took 1.22 3-5, the first two in 27 3-5. Diamond Queen, Bizarro and Kairuri were associated over seven furlongs, and were in a bunch on the post, the first named having the best of the argument. They ran the last six in 1.22 4-5. Went Very Smoothly In keeping with Tuesday’s smart effort, Vallar again showed all his brilliancy when he dashed over five furlongs in I.s—the best of the morning for the distance. He ran his first furlong in 12 2-5, and did not appear to be fully extended at the end. Serang, Clockwork and Mountain Guide were in company for a round, and after looking all over a winner Serang failed to go on and succumbed to Mountain Guide by six lengths, the time being 2.13 2-5. Wild Country was of little use to Richfield over half a mile in 53, t.he latter having four lengths the best of his companion and appearing to be going fairly easily. Lady’s Boy and Tanerir were dispatched from the new mile post, and keeping together, ran out the journey in 1.52 1-5, the first three furlongs taking 40 2-5, and the four 54 3-5. Lady’s Boy worked nicely, and always had Taneriri’s measure. After breakfast Gay Cockade completed a serviceable six furlongs in 1.24 1-5, but there was no pace on over the first furlong. Mon Star led Kamehameha over a round in 2.10 2-5. The former is shaping in improved fashion. At the Barrier The barrier at the new mile was made available for schooling purposes, and the first lot to appear were Onewhero, Arabesque, an unnamed mare, and a three-year-old gelding by Romeo from Glengowan. The last pair failed to jump away, but the inexperienced Arabesque shaped creditably alongside Onewhero, who was allowed to go on and dispose of the mile in 1.54. Immediately after Thespis, Raffliglit, Puriri Park, Tambourine, Good Idea, ! and Speak Out were dispatched, and ran along for three furlongs. Raff- i light and Thespis were smartest, and displayed a nice turn_,of speed in returing 37 2-5, the first two in 24 2-5. On No. 3 grass. Cynthia N. covered a round in 1.41 4-5, and for six furlongs Luxurious and Measurer recorded 1.21,
