A SALUTARY LESSON
YOUNG MOTORIST SWORE AT PEDESTRIAN BUMPED IN THE ROADWAY To be dragged from his motor-car, humped soundly on the roadway in the presence of a young woman passenger and finally flung back into the vehicle bruised and subdued, was the salutary lesson a young man received at the hands of a pedestrian in Parnell recently. The action was provoked as a result of language used by the motorist, who told the wayfarer to get out of the way. The motorist was driving along Manukau Road, when the pedestrian crossed in front of him. Apparently rattled, the driver used had language in the hearing of a number of persons, and forgetful of the presence of his woman passenger. The pedestrian, a well-known resident of the district, thereupon jumped on to the running-board calling on the motorist for an apology, which was refused. While the car was moving off the pedestrian clutched at the young man, hauled him from his seat and bumped him soundly on the road. Meantime a knot of spectators had assembled to view the happening. Taking in the situation at a glance, they acted as referees. After the young man had been adequately humiliated his acquaintance heaved him hack into the car. “I’ll have you in court for this,” the motorist threatened. “Right,” returned the other. “Here’s my name and address, and see that you keep your promise.” The driver hesitated. “Mind you take it to court,” the pedestrian challenged. “When you do I’ll show you up for the young blackguard that you are.” As a week has passed the pedestrian believes that the young man in the car is still giving the matter his consideration.
