REMUERA TRAM ROUTE

EXTENSION TO PROCEED WORK BEGINS IN JANUARY The Remuera tram extension will be proceeded with as soon as the Dominion Road extension now under construction has been completed in January. The Transport Board meeting in committee yesterday made this decision after giving consideration to a protest by Mr. G. G. Ashley that the Mount Eden extension should have precedence, in view of the losses being made by feeder buses in that district. The Remuera East Ratepayers’ Association strongly protested against delaying construction of the Remuera extension on the ground that a promise had been made to proceed with the work when the loan proposals were being put forward. Reasons for the prosecution of the Remuera project were given by the transport manager, Mr. A. E. Ford. He said that it would take until the end of January to complete the plans of the Mount Eden extension as far as they affected the Mount Eden district. The time taken to complete the Mount Roskill section would depend on the negotiations with the Mount Roskill Road Board. It would be the end of February before an actual start could be made on the work, but as the Dominion Road extension would be completed by the end of January, the employees engaged on that work would be employed for a month if the Remuera extension were postponed. The following motion was carried: “That as all preparation had been made to proceed with the Remuera extension, the board will proceed with that work, but that the officers be instructed to expedite the Mount Eden extension and to commence the taking of the necessary levels immediately.” The extension at Remuera will comprise one section, 75 chains in length, extending from the present terminus to a point live chains past the intersection of Meadowbank Road with Remuera Road. The fare will be similar to that in force on other parts of the tramway system.
