HARBOUR VIADUCT TO BE COMPLETED WESTERN SECTION WORK The completion of the viaduct linking the foot of Prince’s Wharf with Freeman’s Bay was authorised by the Auckland Harbour Board yesterday. Work on the eastern section is in sight, and the engineer, Mr. D. Holderness, is ready to commence operations on the western sections at once. The driving of piles on the western section is expected to start early in the New Year, and the whole scheme will be completed before the end of next year. Work on the eastern portion was commenced on April 27. The construction of the two sections differs. The eastern is 520 feet long, and 120 feet wide, being a solid structure, with reinforced concrete paths. The western portion will be an open pile structure, SSO feet long and 85 feet wide. Ultimately the two sections will be connected by a bridge, with a lifting span, to allow the passage of vessels to and from the Freeman’s Bay basin. Costing about £130,000, the viaduct will provide by road and rail a continuation of Quay Street. Thero will be a 30ft roadway, which will turn into Jellicoe Street, on the Freeman's Bay reclamation. Included in applications yesterday, the board decided to make to the Local Governments Loans Board, was an amount of £BO,OOO for building the viaduct.
