ROXY AND EMPRESS

“LUCKY IN LOVE” One of the sweetest love stories ever told is the tuneful production, “Lucky in Love,” now at the Roxy (Queen Street) and Empress (Newton) Theatres. It is an all-talkie complete with many new musical numbers played and sung by Morton Downey, a popular Broadway songster. It is primarily a romantic tale of the love of a stable boy for a great lady, barred by the barriers of rank in Ireland, but in America. In addition to the sweet voice of Morton Downey, there will be harp playing by Paul Suerth, and songs by Betty Lawford. The surge and thunder of a great railroad is contrasted with delicate romance and a gorgeous love story in Lon Chaney’s latest starring vehicle, “Thunder,” a sound synchronised epic of the steel trail, also at the Roxy. Chaney, used to bizarre roles, has one in this picture that is a vivid contrast. He plays “Grumpy” Andersop, grizzled old veteran of the throttle, piloting his crack limited through the snows, staging a thrilling run to the rescue in the flood, and living and breathing the traditions of the road. His love for his engine, his belief that no man is any good unless he’s a railroad man—all these are strikingly true to life. Incidentally, he had to wear a moustache —for the first time in years—because old time engineers usually do!
