SHIELD GOES SOUTH

CHRISTCHURCH HIGH DEFEATS GRAMMAR SCHOOL CRICKET TUSSLE After resting in Auckland for the past five years, the Heathcote Williams Shield, emblem of the secondary school cricket championship of the Dominion, will now find its way to Christchurch. The Auckland Grammar School, which has been the guardian o£ the trophy since 1924 was defeated by the challenging Christchurch Boys' High School team by an innings and 12a runs- in the match concluded at Eden Park yesterday afternoon. On the first day's play the visitors r an up the big total of 371 runs in their iirst innings—a total of which Grammar fell far short, even after two efforts at the batting crease. When the game was resumed yesterday morning Grammar had cne wicket down for 2.S runs in its first innings, and on a wicket which was soft after rain, the holder’s second pair, Jessup and Dixon, took the score to 96. ’But after that the side slumped badlv, chiefly'as a result of the fine bowling by the Christchurch team s medium-fast bowler, Hounsell, who swept all before him at times. Harris and. Burridge stuck to it gamely but were unable to do more than just enter the twenties. Hounsell sent down 28 overs, of which eight were maidens, and he took five wickets for 47 runs. Auckland Grammar was 19S behind when its first innings closed, and in the follow-on the defenders of the trophy made an even more sorry showing when they were all out for 73. Jessup, who top-scored in each innings, was far and away the best batsman on form and if Grammar had had another able to stay with him its performance would have been much better. HISTORY OF TROPHY The side, however, is a young one. and without detracting from Christ-

church’s fine win it can be said that Grammar has fallen on lean days, but has in the team which met defeat yesterday many young players of promise. After Christchurch had claimed its big win, Mr. E. E. Nalder. chairman of the management committee of the Auckland Cricket Association, on behalf of the donor, handed the Heathcote Williams Shield to the keeping of the Christchurch Boys’ High School. In doing so, Mr. Nalder recalled that the first match for the shield took place in 1908 and that yesterday’s was the twenty-first game for it. The Auckland Grammar School had won it eight times, the Christchurch Boys’ High School nine times, and ibe Palmerston North High School twice. The Auckland Grammar School had held it since 1924. when it defeated Christchurch Boys’ High School by an innings and has since successfully defended it three times, twice against Christchurch Boys’ High School and one© against Napier College.
