COUNTED OUT
CLOSE FINISH IN TROT Those who like a close finish to a race had no reason to fall out with the finish of the second division at the Victoria Park (Sydney) trotting meeting recently, in which the outsider, Bogan Boy, beat the well-backed Coonie Alpin, on the post. Coming fast on the outside of the field, Coonie Alpin looked as though he just got up, and the crowd were of this opinion, also, for, after a deal of boo-hooing,’ they counted the judge out. However, the finish was so close that only one man was in a position to tell, and that was the judge himself. Backed from fours right down, Queen Tango was the elect of backers, and, when she went to the front along the back, it did not look like anything beating her to the post. In the straight, Queen Tango tired visibly, and it required the greatest effort to forestall another well-backed performer, in Sheba, for the minor place. Had the latter got smartly off the mark, there is little doubt there would have been no demonstration. Behind Sheba came Tamaki. Apart from Queen Tango, Coonie Alpin and Sheba, nothing in j the race was quoted under double figures in the betting.
