This race special is not &o big as in former years, due possibly to the fact that on this occasion a number of horses for Ellerslie are racing at Hawera today and tomorrow. It is expected that those at Hawera will be putting an appearance at headquarters on Sunday. Trainer P. V. Matson states that all going well the three-year-old Jaleux is a certain starter in the Auckland Cup. Jaleux raced in the New Zealand Cup last month, but he was always among the rear division. He may do better here, for he subsequently ran a fine race in the New Zealand Derby. The Southern light-weight horseman. L. J. Ellis. Will only be riding the first day at Ellerslie, and then will go South to fulfil engagements at Manawatu and Marton. His mounts here included Prodice and Aspiring, but the latter is an unlikely runner in the Railway Handicap. The Lover has not been seen on the tracks since he pulled up lame a week* ago. and it is more than probable that the stable will have to rely solely on Corinax for the Auckland Cup.

Pangolin was on the track early at Riccarton yesterday, but he was not stripped. He looks in rare fettle for his Auckland engagements. E. Shaw comes North to ride him. Count Cavour. Dunraven. Paquito. Amor. Great Star, and Pangolin lett Christchurch last evening en route to Auckland by the special horse train. Jaleux ran some creditable races while in Randwick, and his subsequent effort in the New Zealand Derby at Riccarton found more than one critic with a good word for the three-vear-old. He comprises one of P. "V • Mason’s team on the scene in readiness for his Auckland Cup engagement. Whether he can encompass a sound two miles is a matter for conjecture, but even' so. his prospects in this coveted race cannot be lauded to any extent. He was soundly beaten in yesterday’s gallop with Honour, but his preliminary efforts prior to Boxing Day should afford trackwatchers something definite to go on.
